Back to School with Braces: Your Smile Survival Guide for the New School Year

Posted Sep 1st, 2025

As summer winds down and school supplies start piling up, it’s time to prepare for another busy school year! At Baby & Rojas Orthodontics, we know that going back to school with braces or aligners can feel like one more thing to think about—but don’t worry, we’ve got your back!

Here’s everything you (and your child) need to know to keep your orthodontic treatment on track while acing the school year.

🎒 1. Pack a Braces-Friendly School Kit

Whether your child is in middle school, high school, or even college, it’s smart to keep a small orthodontic kit in their backpack or locker. We recommend:

  • A toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Floss or floss picks
  • Orthodontic wax
  • Rubber bands (if prescribed)
  • A retainer or aligner case
  • Mini mirror

This quick toolkit helps handle lunchtime cleanups, poking wires, or any unexpected ortho surprises.

🥪 2. Be Smart at Lunch

Sticky, chewy, or crunchy cafeteria favourites can damage brackets or wires. Avoid things like:

  • Hard chips
  • Caramel or chewy candy
  • Whole apples (cut them instead!)
  • Bagels or crusty bread

Instead, go for braces-safe options like:

  • Soft sandwiches
  • Yogurt
  • Pasta or rice dishes
  • Bananas, berries, or applesauce

If your child wears Invisalign®, remind them to remove their aligners before eating and store them in a case—not a napkin!

⏰ 3. Keep a Consistent Routine

With new schedules, sports, and school events, it’s easy to forget orthodontic routines. Make sure your child:

  • Brushes after breakfast and before bed
  • Flosses once a day
  • Wears rubber bands or aligners as prescribed.

Try setting reminders on a phone or using sticky notes in a locker or planner.

📅 4. Schedule Appointments Around School Hours

We offer flexible scheduling—including before- or after-school appointments—to make it easier to stay on track with checkups. If you haven’t booked your next visit yet, now’s the perfect time before the calendar fills up.

🏫 5. Talk to Teachers or Coaches if Needed

If your child is new to braces, let teachers or coaches know. They may need to excuse them for a quick brushing after lunch or understand if they’re sore after a wire adjustment.

✅ Bonus Tip: Confidence Is Key!

Starting school with a new smile-in-progress can make some kids self-conscious. Remind them that braces and aligners are very common—and their smile is already improving every day. Encourage them to smile big and feel proud of the changes!
