Problems to Check in Seven Year Olds

August 17th, 2017

It is recommend that every child should see an orthodontic specialist no later than age 7. This could be as young as 2 or 3 in some cases. Many orthodontic problems are easier to correct if detected early rather than waiting until jaw growth has slowed. Early treatment can mean a patient may avoid surgery or other more serious corrections later in life. This image shows for problems to watch for in seven year olds. #babyrojasortho #age7 #orthodonticspecialists

Preparing for Cold and Flu Season

December 18th, 2016

It’s that time of year to start thinking about protecting yourself and your family from the flu. Here are some simple steps you can take to help yourself avoid colds and the flu this season.

• Wash your hands before and after brushing
• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen
• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster
• Replace toothbrush after every cold or flu or every 3-4 months when bristles appear worn

To promote a healthy and clean environment, we and our team give a great deal of attention to sanitation and sterilization in our office at all times, as well as following all requirements for sterilizing instruments and work surfaces.

For the protection of other patients and our staff, we always ask that patients reschedule their appointments if they have any type of cold or illness that can infect others.

Hope this helps and give us a call if you have any questions! Stay healthy!

Be a Santa to a Senior

November 28th, 2016

“Be a Santa to a Senior” is a great program that provides seniors on our community a little joy over the holiday season. Becoming a “Santa to a Senior” is similar to adopting a child over Christmas. You simply visit a designated location in your area which will have a tree with ornaments/bulbs on it, the bulbs will have the seniors request written on it, chose one (or more), buy a present/wrap and return to the designated box.

There are 5 locations in London. If you are not in the London area and want to check if there is a “Be as Santa to a Senior Program” near you simply follow this link, enter and enter your postal code.

Their efforts has recently reached as far as Haiti!

Amazing Patient

October 5th, 2016

We have our share of outstanding patients in and out of the office. Eden is no exception. Check out this article written up about Eden who puts the needs of others before her own by collecting and donating items to those in need. She has turned this into an annual event, using her birthday to collect items needed. She has supported many different causes in her 12 years, from Teddy Bears for kids in Haiti to collecting pennies to reforest a park! We are so proud of you Eden and hope you keep up the great work. We look forward to seeing what organization you chose to help for your 13th birthday!

To find out who else Eden has helped please visit the full article in The School Age Children Resource. If looking at the article on the digital version you can quickly find it by searching for pages 98-99. It is Page 97 in the hard copy available all over the city. This publication is given out to all SK and JK students and contains a wealth of information. The website parentguide.ca provides pick up locations.

Our Inspiring Patient, Mackenzie

March 23rd, 2016

Mackenzie is one of our great patients and was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 2013. She has been completing the Telus JDRF Walk since then.  Dr. Baby and Dr. Rojas are proud to sponsor her and her team “The Test Strips” again this year. Her mother Jaime took time to give us some insight on how Mackenzie is doing and what she has been through over the last 3 years. We hope you take time to read what her mother had to say.  You can also find more information on her donation page found below.

“Mackenzie is now 14 years old she will turn 15 in September. She is now in grade 9 and finished her first semester with honours and an extra credit (she took online summer school to get a head start). Mackenzie has taken the year off of dance, but is going to a gym (fitness forum) 3 times a week for cardio and strength training.

Mackenzie was diagnosed October 01, 2013. This equals 875 days since diagnosis, 7400 finger pokes to test blood, 3700 needles and 240 insulin infusion sites inserted. Through all of this she is still a happy teenager with a great outlook on life. She independent, strong and determined to succeed.

Mackenzie recently had family visit from England and is looking forward to a trip to England in the near future to visit the rest of her family.

This will be Mackenzie's third year participating in the JDRF Walk for a cure. Mackenzie now has over 15 people walking to support her on team "the test strips" This year’s event will take place at TD Waterhouse Stadium on June 12, 2016.

Thank you again for all your support for Mackenzie. We are truly blessed by all the wonderful, supportive people in our lives and the continual love and support given to Mackenzie. Her strength comes from knowing she is so loved and supported.”

Sincerely,

Good vs Bad Brushing with Braces

March 16th, 2016

Good brushing and flossing is a VERY important part of your orthodontic care.

Plaque can easily build up around the edges of your braces. If this plaque is not properly removed, white or brown marks may appear on the enamel surface of your teeth and these marks may be permanent.

We want the very best for you and your smile so please speak to our team if you have questions about brushing and flossing with braces. We're in this together!

Questions You Should Ask Before Getting Braces

March 7th, 2016

When considering orthodontic care for yourself or a family member it can feel overwhelming and you may not be sure what questions to ask. You should know that not all dental practitioners are created equal. Some specialize in different areas of care. Orthodontists receive additional university training, education and certification in their field of expertise. Many practitioners who provide orthodontic treatment do not have additional orthodontic training from an accredited university, yet they still may refer to themselves as an orthodontist. We believe you should be informed when deciding who you will chose to do your orthodontic work.

The attached image contains a list of questions to consider when looking for an orthodontic provider.

As always our team is ready to answer any questions you may have.

Many people are misinformed when it comes to orthodontic providers and treatment. Please help us spread the word and share this blog post with your friends and family.

Ceph X-Ray at your Records Appointment, London, Orthodontist

October 26th, 2015

This short video shows what you can expect during your "Ceph" x- ray at your records appointment.

The cephalometric (ceph) x-ray captures the patient from their side profile. Once the ceph is taken our orthodontists will contact analyses on your radiograph. It is a valuable x-ray as it not only shows the teeth and the bone, but it also includes soft tissues which can help the orthodontist predict how the bone will structure, and its potential to change during orthodontic treatment. ‪#‎cephxray‬ ‪#‎londonbraces‬ ‪#‎londonorthodontist‬

Back to School With Braces - London, Orthodontist

September 4th, 2015

Back to School With Braces

It's that time of year again! To help you survive school with your new braces or appliances, check out this list. These supplies will help you keep your braces clean and comfortable throughout your school day.

1. Toothbrush & Toothpaste
It’s important to take a few minutes to brush your teeth after lunch. This helps get out any food that may get stuck in your brackets and can also help prevent tooth decay and bad breath.

2. Floss/ Floss Threaders

Even with constant brushing, sometimes you can’t quite get out leftover food with just a toothbrush. Floss may be necessary.

3. Proxy brush

This is the little Christmas tree shaped brush given to in your oral hygiene kit. It is very helpful for removing food stuck under wires and in between braces.

4. Chapstick

Using chapstick or lip balm is an easy way to treat your chapped lips that occur as a result of your braces.

5. Dental Wax
The wires on your braces can be abrasive against the inside of your mouth, often leaving sore spots. Dental wax helps decrease this irritation.

6. Elastics

Elastics are a very important part of your orthodontic care. If you are asked to wear them, please do so. Use your class schedule as a reminder to change your elastics every few hours. As the elastics stretch out, they become less effective so changing them regularly is great idea.. Keep a few on hand during your school day.

Having braces placed means you are on your way to a new beautiful healthy smile. We encourage you to brush and maintain you smile during the school year. We know schedules can be hectic and fitting in time to brush and floss can't always be easy, but we can assure you that if you take care of braces and appliances during treatment, you will have something to SMILE about the day your braces are removed!

If you have any questions about going back to school with braces, or need some tips or tricks be sure to ask our team the next time you are in. You can also check us out on Pinterest for some helpful back to school lunch ideas.

The concerts are free, but we encourage you to bring a donation for your local food bank -- either a non-perishable food item or a cash donation. All contributions will stay in your community. "

Our Patients are Talented!

November 25th, 2014

Wade Collins, patient of our office AND a talented musician. We are proud of your accomplishments Wade and wish you all the best in your music career.

Wade Collins is a self taught musician. He has a strong passion for music, playing; gui...tar, drums, keyboard, and harmonica. He likes to perform many different genres of famous songs, and also loves singing and writing his own original music.

He has written, and created two CDs so far. The songs on his first CD "Finding Oneself" were written, composed, performed, and recorded solely by Wade when he was 15. His second, and more recent, CD was created by his band "Escape Claws". Most of the material in this self titled album "Escape Claws", was again: composed, written and performed by Wade. Along with one song, and many melodies written and sung by bass player Jeff Klasen; and drums performed by Wade's father, Rob Collins.

Both CDs feature a large variety in sound and style, and are a nice break from the usual; to be enjoyed by many.

Here is a link to the latest Escape Claws album on Itunes:

Project Blue November

November 4th, 2014

In May we introduced you to Mackenzie, one of our “Patients with a Cause”.  Mackenzie was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in October 2013. In June, Mackenzie completed the Telus Walk for Diabetes  where she surpassed her fundraising goal.  November is Diabetes Awareness Month and now we want to help Mackenzie spread the word about Type 1 Diabetes. “Project Blue November” is a movement that aims to provide a collection of ideas and materials to help those who wish to bring more awareness to  Type 1 diabetes.  We encourage everyone to visit www.projectbluenovember.com and like their Facebook Page at  https://www.facebook.com/ProjectBlueNovember.

World Diabetes Day also has a fun free app to download.  The app allows you to snap a picture of you, your friends or your family and incorporate a blue circle.  The blue circle is the universal symbol for diabetes.  You can be creative as you wish!  Search for “World Diabetes Day” on your iphone or your ipad and help bring awareness to your friends and family!   Posting these pictures on your social networks will help spread the word and encourage more awareness for a disease that affects so many.  Anyone who posts a picture using the blue circle to our Facebook page will receive 2 smile miles.

Throughout the month of November we will also post facts and information about Type 1 diabetes, if you “like” AND “share” these posts you will also receive 2 smile miles.

What Won't This Dad Do???

June 11th, 2014

The last couple months we were proud to introduce to you our “Patients With a Cause.” We are now excited to introduce to you Craig, our “Dad With a Cause.” Craig is a patient dad of our practice has been involved with the “Make a Wish Found ation” for years. He has done things such as dying his hair blue and even shaving his head this past March in support of “Make a Wish.” He has now upped the ante and will be RAPPELLING OFF THE TD CENTRE BUILDING, in downtown London on June 20th! The fun part is, if he reaches his fundraising goal of $1,500 he will wear a tuxedo because he states “that’s what James Bond would do!” We would LOVE to see Craig become James Bond while supporting Make A Wish, which makes wishes and dreams come true for children with life threatening illnesses. If you are interested in helping him reach his goal, please go to the following link:

Meet Josh Our Patient With a Cause!

May 25th, 2014

Josh Pritchard - Crohn’s and Colitis Canada’s Gutsy Walk

Joshua was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease one week before Christmas 2011 at the age of 8.  He had lost weight, was very lethargic, looked pale and had stomach pains. For almost 2 years it was a constant battle with daily medication and vitamins to try and make Joshua feel good enough to get through the day. It wasn't working, he wasn't growing at all. Then we tried yet another medication.  I am happy to say that these last 6 months Joshua has been feeling really good. You can see it in his passion for hockey thismpast winter. He didn't miss one practice or game this past season due to his disease. He gave it his all.

Joshua's doctors at the Children’s Hospital have him spend all day, every 8 weeks, in the hospital for an IV infusion of medication. He misses a day of school but it does have a positive effect. This can be a long term medication he will have to take to keep him feeling good but only if his body agrees to it. In return, there are always possible side effects that may occur in the future. This is why WE NEED TO FIND A CURE and we are turning to all of you.

Joshua and his team have walked the last 2 years in the Gutsy Walk and on Sunday, June 8th, 2014 Joshua and his team will be participating at the “Crohn’s and Colitis Canada’s Gutsy Walk” again. These much-needed funds that are raised will support critical research and education to find cures for Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis and improve the lives of children and adults affected by these chronic diseases. This cause is very important, so check out Joshua's link and be GUTSY.

Canada has one of the highest rates for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis in the world and those rates are increasing.

Most alarming, the number of new cases of Crohn’s Disease in Canadian children has almost doubled since 1995.

Crohn's and colitis are lifelong diseases that can have a devastating impact on quality of life, elevate the risk of colorectal cancer, and in the case of Crohn’s Disease, shorten life expectancy.

If interested in support Joshua’s Journey please visit www.gutsywalk.ca, then click on “Pledge Participant” and either search for Joshua Pritchard or Team Name Joshua’s Journey

Patients With a Cause - Meet Mackenzie

March 18th, 2014

“Patient with a Cause”

MACKENZIE BERTELESEN – Juvenile Diabetes Research

Meet Mackenzie is a patient of our office. She is an active 12 year old girl, who is a competitive dancer and soccer player. She loves spending time with friends and has a passion for the arts. On October 01, 2013 Mackenzie's life changed forever, when she was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus type I, also known as type I diabetes.

Type I diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes suddenly by destroying the insulin producing cells in the pancreas, that leads to high levels of glucose in the blood. It represents only 5-10% of all diabetes cases and left untreated type I diabetes is fatal. It cannot be prevented; it is not caused by poor diet and cannot be modified, corrected or cured by diet. There is currently no cure for type I diabetes.

To keep Mackenzie alive, she has to endure multiple daily injections of insulin 4-6 times per day and test her blood sugar levels 6-10 times per day by pricking her finger with a needle to test her blood.

Medication and supplies to keep Mackenzie alive averages $1000 plus per month and is not covered by OHIP. It is an out of pocket expense.
A CURE IS NEEDED.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), is the largest charitable funder of, and advocate for, diabetes science worldwide with more than 80% of donations directly supporting research, education and advocacy.

On June 8th, 2014 more than 45 000 people across Canada along with 6 other countries will come together as a community to raise funds for research to cure, better treat and prevent type I diabetes. Mackenzie and her family will be participating in the walk to cure type I diabetes.

Please support Mackenzie by donating to the JDRF Telus Walk to cure type I diabetes and help end this disease.

Chex Mix, not a good idea for patients in braces.

March 5th, 2014

Chex Mix along with hard, crunchy, chewy foods can wreak havoc on your braces. Please be mindful of what you are eating while in braces or other cemented orthodontic appliances. Broken brackets can increase treatment time. We want you to get you back to eating those foods you love as soon as possible. Our Pinterest page is full of "Braces Friendly" recipes. Be sure to check it out!

Mouthguards!

August 21st, 2013

See what Health Canada has to say about mouth guards and their importance in the link provided below!

While in braces it is just and important to have a mouth guard. A properly fitted mouth guard is especially important for people who wear braces. A blow to the face while playing sports could damage the brackets or other fixed orthodontic appliances.  A mouth guard also provides a barrier between the braces and your cheek or lips, limiting the risk of soft tissue injuries.

We are fully booked for same day mouth guard deliveries this Saturday at our Mouthguard Clinic with the London Knights, but you can still come by for an impression and have your mouth guard given to you on another day. Protecting your smile is very important to us and we hope you can join us!

Have Any Pennies Laying Around??

July 17th, 2013

If you haven't heard we are collecting pennies for "The Waterschool Project" Check out the full details below!

Dr. Baby, Dr. Rojas and team would like to bring awareness to a cause that the office has supported for many years, “The Waterschool”.

When we run our tap to brush our teeth, for a glass of water, or to a fill up a pot to boil your pasta, we don’t always think about the people of developing countries who do not have that luxury. Many people in rural areas and in developing countries draw their drinking water mainly from surface sources such as ponds, rivers and lakes. These same sources are used by cattle and other livestock and for bathing, washing clothes and other domestic uses. Even when improved sources are provided (bore holes, rain water harvesting, etc.), the water is usually contaminated during collection, transportation and storage. The Waterschool educates the people of this by using a three step process which ensures clean water through existing agencies in the beneficiary area. The Waterschool is currently working in Uganda and Kenya and has worked in Haiti in the past.

Over the summer months our office will be collecting pennies in support of this cause. All penny donations will be matched by the doctors and donated to The Waterschool and its initiatives. It is amazing; a $10 donation can help provide clean water to one child for a LIFETIME!

All three of our office locations are happy to take pennies that you may have laying around off your hands. Water jugs will be set up at each office location for this purpose. Please remember every penny helps! Our office is open to the public to bring in their pennies, not just our patients and families so please spread the word! You can also help by donating any current Smiles Miles to this cause. If you would like to donate your Smile Miles please email Tricia tricia@londonbraces.com for further information.

What is a Malocclusion??

March 26th, 2013

Malocclusion of the teeth is a term frequently used at our office. Ever wonder what the orthodontist or another staff member means when using this term? Malocclusion simply means the teeth are not aligned properly.

Malocclusion is most often hereditary, which means the condition is passed down through families. There may be a difference between the size of the upper and lower jaws or between jaw and tooth size, resulting in overcrowding of teeth or in abnormal bite patterns.

Other causes of malocclusion include:

  • Childhood habits such as thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, pacifier use beyond age 3, and prolonged use of a bottle
  • Extra teeth, lost teeth, impacted teeth, or abnormally shaped teeth
  • Ill-fitting dental fillings or crowns
  • Misalignment of jaw fractures after a severe injury
  • Tumors of the mouth and jaw

When it comes to malocclusion there are different categories;

  • Class 1 malocclusion is the most common. The bite is normal, but the upper teeth slightly overlap the lower teeth.
  • Class 2 malocclusion, also called overbite, occurs when the upper jaw and teeth severely overlap the bottom jaw and teeth.
  • Class 3 malocclusion, also called underbite, occurs when the lower jaw protrudes or juts forward, causing the lower jaw and teeth to overlap the upper jaw and teeth.

Some symptoms of malocclusion include;

  • Abnormal alignment of teeth
  • Abnormal appearance of the face
  • Difficulty or discomfort when biting or chewing
  • Speech difficulties (rare) including lisp
  • Mouth breathing

By treating moderate or severe malocclusion, the teeth are easier to clean and there is less risk of tooth decay and periodontal diseases (gingivitis or periodontitis). Treatment eliminates strain on the teeth, jaws, and muscles, which lessens the risk of breaking a tooth and may reduce symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorders.

The goal at our office is to correct the positioning of the teeth with braces or other appliances.

The Cinderella Project!

January 27th, 2013

Last year we received a request from one our patient families to help out with the “The Cinderella Project” and we were thrilled to jump on board to support this fantastic cause.

Do you remember your Grade 8 or High School graduation? How about the dress and accessories you wore or the girl you took and how special she looked when you picked her up?

Every young girl deserves to feel that good when celebrating their achievement of graduating from elementary or high school.  Unfortunately, that isn’t always financially possible for everyone.  We are also very aware of the recent closures of the industries in and around our community and how that will increase the need for assistance.

Again this year ‘The Cinderella Project’ will be making available to the girls in our community dresses, shoes, clutches, fingernail polish & bling - anything that will make their night perfect.

We are hoping you, your friends and family will take time to check your closets, and donate any unneeded dresses and prom accessories. Dresses (and accessories) can be dropped off at any of our three locations until February 28th.  We will take care of the rest.

The dresses should be gently used and suitable for either graduation (public or secondary), or prom. Unfortunately, wedding dresses cannot be accepted. The Cinderella project does offer garment bags to the girls when they pick up their dresses, but if you have one that you could spare, it would be greatly appreciated.

For more info on The Cinderella Project please click the link below:

www.londoncinderellaproject.com

Last year we were thrilled to donate approximately 200 dresses and many accessories to the Cinderella Project.

We appreciate your support and say thank you on behalf of all of the beautiful girls that will be attending graduation/prom this June.

It's National Orthodontic Health Month - Here are Some Tips to Keep Your Braces Clean!!

October 4th, 2012

It's National Orthodontic Health Month and we want to make sure you braces are as clean and as shiny as they can be! Here are some great tips on keeping those braces sparkling!!

One tooth at a time. When you brush, take time with each individual tooth – at least 10 seconds each – and pay careful attention to the spots where your teeth touch your braces.

It’s all about the angles. Brush the tops of your teeth and braces with your brush angled down toward where they meet. Brush the bottoms of your teeth and braces with your brush angled up.

The tooth, the whole tooth, nothing but the tooth. While the front surface of your teeth may seem like the most logical to clean, it’s equally important to clean the inner surface of your teeth (tongue side) as well as the chewing surface. And be sure to clean along your gum line – a key spot for plaque buildup.

Step 1: eat, step 2: clean. While you’re in treatment, it’s important to brush after every meal. Bits of food can easily get caught between braces and teeth, and these food bits interact with bacteria in your mouth to cause decay. The longer food is in contact with your teeth, the greater opportunity for plaque to form. If you are eating somewhere that you can’t brush, thoroughly rinse your mouth with water.

Always be prepared. The easiest way to be sure you can brush after every meal is to get in the habit of taking a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss with you wherever you go. Designate a special container just for your teeth-cleaning tools and keep it in your purse, backpack, or laptop case.

Remove the moving parts. If you have elastic bands or headgear, remove these parts before you brush or floss.

Fluoride is your friend. Fluoride helps prevent cavities. Be sure to brush with fluoride toothpaste, and rinse with fluoride mouthwash.

Interproximal brushes (sometimes called proxa brushes or interdental brushes) are cone-shaped and come in very handy for reaching spots around your braces that standard brushes can’t.

Find the floss for you. Regular floss works for some patients, but others find it easier to work with a floss threader, which helps you get the floss into tight places. Other patients like an all-in-one product called Superfloss, which comes with a stiff end for easy threading, a spongy section for cleaning wide spaces, and regular floss for narrow spaces.

Make time for the pros. It’s your job to take care of the everyday cleaning. But make sure to visit your dentist regularly while in treatment, to get the deep, thorough cleaning that only a professional can provide.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

August 24th, 2012

Orthodontic treatments are used to correct malocclusion, a condition more commonly known as a bad bite. The length of treatment time varies depending on the severity of the bite problem.

What is a "bad bite"?
A bad bite occurs when spacing or alignment problems are present. This often includes teeth that are protruding, crowded, or crooked. Sometimes teeth appear straight, but have an uneven bite because the upper and lower jaws do not align properly. Teeth that are irregularly spaced — either too far apart or too close together — can also cause bite problems.
Frequent causes of bite problems:
• Heredity
• Thumb-sucking
• Premature tooth loss
• Accidents

Benefits of orthodontic treatment:

Appearance -
Correcting a bad bite often creates a more attractive smile, which frequently raises the patient's self esteem.

Preventing Decay -
It also results in a healthier mouth. It is much more difficult to thoroughly clean teeth that are crooked, protruding, overlapped, or crowed. This may allow plaque to build up, which can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, and even tooth loss. Orthodontic treatment corrects these conditions, so cleaning can be more efficient.

Avoiding Alignment Issues -
An uneven bite can interfere with the motions of chewing and speaking. This can cause abnormal wear to tooth enamel, which may require pricey cosmetic restorative treatments, such as crowns or veneers, to correct. It can also lead to problems with the jaws. Orthodontic treatment lessens the likelihood of those issues, as well.

Types of orthodontic treatment:
Braces: Metal or ceramic brackets are bonded to the front of teeth. Wires and elastics are attached to the brackets to straighten teeth.
Invisalign®: Advanced 3D computer images of the patients' mouth are used to create clear, custom aligners that slowly move teeth. They are nearly invisible and are more comfortable than traditional braces. They are also removable, which makes it possible to continue with normal brushing and flossing.

Retainers: A retainer is a removable piece worn inside the mouth that uses pressure to force teeth to move into proper alignment. They are used after braces are removed.

Length of orthodontic treatment: Treatment typically ranges from 12 to 36 months. Factors include the age, cooperation level, and growth occurrence of the patient. The complexity of the case also impacts the treatment time.

Elements of Braces

August 2nd, 2012

When coming to our office to have braces put on, you may find yourself feeling a bit intimated and nervous about the experience. We hope to help you feel more at ease by explaining exactly what the different parts of braces are, and what they do.
Parts of Braces
• Elastic Tie — This is a very small rubber band, and it holds the archwire in place.
• Archwire — This is the main part of the braces. It is a wire guide that tracks the teeth. The wire may be moved from time to time during treatment to continue straightening a patient's teeth.
• Loop in Archwire — This is not in all braces. If it is used, it is to close a gap left from a tooth extraction.
• Bracket — This piece of equipment holds the archwire in place. Formerly, many patients used colored rubber bands to keep the brackets in place, but now since most brackets are cemented on, this is no longer necessary.
• Headgear Tube — This is a hollow area near the back bands, which allows the headgear to fit into the braces. This is only used on patients who require headgear.
• Coil Spring — If needed, this would fit between a bracket and the main archwire. Its purpose is to open up the space between the teeth. This is not necessarily used on all patients.
• Tie Wire — This is another piece of equipment that is used to keep the archwire in place. It is a thin wire that wraps around the bracket.
• Band — This is a metal band that fits completely around a tooth. It is used to help adhere brackets to the tooth.
• Hook — This is the piece of equipment that is used to attach the elastics, also known as rubber bands, around the bracket.
• Elastic — These elastics are used to connect one point of the appliance to another. The purpose is to apply pressure, and encourage the teeth to move into the proper positioning.
By defining each appliance we hope you or your child will be less apprehensive about getting braces put on. At the end of your treatment, you will have a bright, straight smile to show off to all of your friends.

A Thank You Letter from the London Food Bank

January 29th, 2010

We wanted to share with you a wonderful letter that was sent to our office from the London Food Bank. This good news is thanks to all of your contributions. As you can see, it really has made a difference!

Dear Dr. Baby, Dr. Rojas and staff,

Thank you for your recent food donation to the London Food Bank.

As we experience the cold winter months the number of client visits will rise as individuals may experience the other financial challenges of heating winter clothing costs. Often our clients will pay those bills first which leaves them with very little or no money to spend on food. This is an experience common to many of our clients.

The generous citizens of London and the surrounding area, through the efforts of the London Food Bank, have in the past fed on average, approximately 2500 families per month. Throughout 2009, we saw a significant increase in the number we are assisting. We have been helping on average over 3000 families each month with our highest month being 3377. The number of individuals helped in 2009 was approximately 85,000 and roughly 35,000 of them were children and youth under the age of 18. We anticipate that this increase will unfortunately be the new norm.

Individuals can use the services of the London Food Bank once a month. Most of our clients, in fact 75%, use the food bank four times or less in a year. It is this statistic that demonstrates to us that the individuals who use this food bank do so because they need to, not because they want to.

With sincere gratitude,

Meet Brittnei, an amazing member of one of our practice's families

December 18th, 2009

We have many great people and families in our practice and we wanted to introduce you to a very special young woman whom we have the privilege of knowing. Brittnei Berrisford is a full time student at the University of Guelph who, during her time off from school, travels all over the world to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Our office cares deeply about the work that Brittnei does. We will continue to support Brittnei and follow her travels in underdeveloped countries. If you would like to follow Brittnei as well, we will be posting her updates and pictures on our website and other social networks. We think that the work that Brittnei does is amazing, we look forward to seeing where else her heart takes her.

If you would like to see more of what Brittnei does, or you would like to help sponsor her upcoming trip to Haiti this spring (2010), you can contact her by phone 519-505-1577 or email at bberrisf@uoguelph.ca. You can also visit www.glahaiti.org for more information on the orphanage in Haiti that Brittnei will be working at this spring.

Creating Aspiring Orthodontists, by Drs. Baby and Rojas

July 20th, 2009

To celebrate Oral Health Month, Drs. Baby and Rojas had some JK/SK students from a nearby school come and learn about what to expect when they visit an orthodontic office. They arrived by bus all bundled up ready to learn. The had a chance to tour all the rooms of our office and participate in a fun activity at each station.

They got to try on gloves and masks, were shown how the chairs and special lights work, saw what braces looks like and finished it all off with some airbrushed tattoos. The pictures say a thousand words, you can tell these kids had a great time. Our Kids Day 2009 was a huge success; We may have even inspired some future orthodontists!
