Invisalign allows the freedom to eat what you want when you want with ease. But did you know that when wearing Invisalign trays you should not drink hot liquids or carbonated beverages. Hot liquids can cause warping of your trays. Coffee and tea may also stain your aligners. We also strongly advise against drinking carbonated beverages while wearing your Invisalign trays. These trays can trap sugar or acidic fluids around your teeth leading to decay. Furthermore drinking carbonated beverages can also greatly affect the integrity of the trays leading to premature deterioration. We want the best outcome for you while you are in Invisalign or any other type or orthodontic treatment and for this reason we suggest you to only drink water while wearing your Invisalign trays.
For more information about living with Invisalign visit this website.

We have our share of outstanding patients in and out of the office. Eden is no exception. Check out this article written up about Eden who puts the needs of others before her own by collecting and donating items to those in need. She has turned this into an annual event, using her birthday to collect items needed. She has supported many different causes in her 12 years, from Teddy Bears for kids in Haiti to collecting pennies to reforest a park! We are so proud of you Eden and hope you keep up the great work. We look forward to seeing what organization you chose to help for your 13th birthday!

In the media you may have heard recently the flossing may not be necessary and has no effect on getting cavities or keeping gum disease away. Well, we ask that you think twice about that statement. Patients in braces or other orthodontic appliances are at risk for inflamed gums, decalcification leading to cavities due to the lack of proper brushing and floss use. We encourage all patients to continue to floss. Please take a moment to look at these images to get an idea of what a lack of oral hygiene can do. Our advice - PLEASE FLOSS in conjunction with proper brushing.

Some interesting Braces Facts!
Braces go WAY back :)
Braces have been around for a long time – with the first design being created in 1728. But due to huge advancements in technology and materials, today’s teeth straightening systems are super comfortable and efficient – some are practically invisible thanks to Invisalign’s Clear Aligners.
The Science Connection
Did you know that some wires used in orthodontic cases were developed by NASA – the wires have a shape memory so they won’t become distorted due to body heat and/or pressure.
Lighnting Isn't a Concern
Braces don’t increase your odds of being hit by lightning! Braces aren’t magnetic and won’t set-off any metal detectors.
Age is not a factor
You are never too old to wear orthodontic braces. Adult orthodontic patients make up a large segment of the population straightening their teeth. It’s never too late to have the smile you’ve always dreamed of.
Something to Think About..
100% of Orthodontists are Dentists – but only 5% of Dentists are Orthodontists. Having a consultation with a Certified Orthodontist in enables you to get a complete and accurate diagnosis from someone trained to deal specifically with malocclusion and other bite and skeletal issues.
Wear Those Retainers
Nearly 25% of orthodontic patients have to repeat treatment because they failed to wear their retainer as instructed by an orthodontist!
What Makes us Smile
Want to know what makes an Orthodontist smile – You wearing your retainer.

Retainers are an important part of your orthodontic treatment!
Here are 7 easy steps for taking care of your retainer!!
1. Wear your retainers all of the time, except when eating or brushing. If you are unsure how often to wear your retainers be sure to ask a team member next time you are in.
2. When your retainers are not in your mouth, ALWAYS keep them in your retainer case. Not in a napkin or lose in your pocket, this is sure way to throw out or break them.
3. Do not leave your retainers in a really hot or cold car.
4. Keep your retainers away from pets, dogs LOVE them.
5. Clean your retainers by holding them carefully and brushing with a toothbrush and toothpaste. If you have an essix (clear retainer) be sure to ask our team on current cleaning recommendations.
6. Do not place retainers in the microwave or in boiling water
7. If you have any questions be sure to ask us.

HELP!!! What can I eat with braces??
The best foods to eat with braces are those that are not high in sugar and do not require excessive chewing. For breakfast, try eggs, yogurt, bacon, cottage cheese or oatmeal. Lunch may steer toward a banana rather than an apple, soft sandwich, soup or a salad without nuts, and a glass of water. Avoid fruit juices and pop as these are very acidic.
Post Adjustment Foods
After an adjustment occurs, the teeth may be sore and sensitive for a day or two. During this time, it is best to eat soft foods. Examples include:
- Mashed potatoes
- Ice cream
- Cottage cheese
Foods to Avoid
According to the American Dental Association, anyone who wears braces – whether fixed or removable – should avoid excessive snacking and should aim to eat a healthy and balanced diet. It is also important to avoid foods that could cause damage to the braces, such as:
- Hard candies
- Certain raw vegetables (for example, carrots)
- Crusty bread
No matter what you eat with braces it is important to keep the crevices between the teeth and around the braces very clean. That means brushing and flossing after meals to prevent the build-up of plaque and decay. Not only can failing to do so damage the teeth, but it can also cause discoloration.
Over the counter pain medication can be used to help with any discomfort you may have after your adjustment appointment. Sometimes, taking over the counter pain medication before your adjustment appointment may help as well.
If you have any concerns or questions about foods to avoid please do not hesitate to contact our office. 1-800-920-9798 or visit our website www.londonbraces.com

Malocclusion of the teeth is a term frequently used at our office. Ever wonder what the orthodontist or another staff member means when using this term? Malocclusion simply means the teeth are not aligned properly.
Malocclusion is most often hereditary, which means the condition is passed down through families. There may be a difference between the size of the upper and lower jaws or between jaw and tooth size, resulting in overcrowding of teeth or in abnormal bite patterns.
Other causes of malocclusion include:
- Childhood habits such as thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, pacifier use beyond age 3, and prolonged use of a bottle
- Extra teeth, lost teeth, impacted teeth, or abnormally shaped teeth
- Ill-fitting dental fillings or crowns
- Misalignment of jaw fractures after a severe injury
- Tumors of the mouth and jaw
When it comes to malocclusion there are different categories;
- Class 1 malocclusion is the most common. The bite is normal, but the upper teeth slightly overlap the lower teeth.
- Class 2 malocclusion, also called overbite, occurs when the upper jaw and teeth severely overlap the bottom jaw and teeth.
- Class 3 malocclusion, also called underbite, occurs when the lower jaw protrudes or juts forward, causing the lower jaw and teeth to overlap the upper jaw and teeth.
Some symptoms of malocclusion include;
- Abnormal alignment of teeth
- Abnormal appearance of the face
- Difficulty or discomfort when biting or chewing
- Speech difficulties (rare) including lisp
- Mouth breathing
By treating moderate or severe malocclusion, the teeth are easier to clean and there is less risk of tooth decay and periodontal diseases (gingivitis or periodontitis). Treatment eliminates strain on the teeth, jaws, and muscles, which lessens the risk of breaking a tooth and may reduce symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorders.
The goal at our office is to correct the positioning of the teeth with braces or other appliances.

Last year we received a request from one our patient families to help out with the “The Cinderella Project” and we were thrilled to jump on board to support this fantastic cause.
Do you remember your Grade 8 or High School graduation? How about the dress and accessories you wore or the girl you took and how special she looked when you picked her up?
Every young girl deserves to feel that good when celebrating their achievement of graduating from elementary or high school. Unfortunately, that isn’t always financially possible for everyone. We are also very aware of the recent closures of the industries in and around our community and how that will increase the need for assistance.
Again this year ‘The Cinderella Project’ will be making available to the girls in our community dresses, shoes, clutches, fingernail polish & bling - anything that will make their night perfect.
We are hoping you, your friends and family will take time to check your closets, and donate any unneeded dresses and prom accessories. Dresses (and accessories) can be dropped off at any of our three locations until February 28th. We will take care of the rest.
The dresses should be gently used and suitable for either graduation (public or secondary), or prom. Unfortunately, wedding dresses cannot be accepted. The Cinderella project does offer garment bags to the girls when they pick up their dresses, but if you have one that you could spare, it would be greatly appreciated.
For more info on The Cinderella Project please click the link below:
Last year we were thrilled to donate approximately 200 dresses and many accessories to the Cinderella Project.
We appreciate your support and say thank you on behalf of all of the beautiful girls that will be attending graduation/prom this June.

A question we commonly get asked is “When should my child first see an orthodontist?.” The American and Canadian Associations of Orthodontists recommends that all children see an orthodontist by the age seven. At this age, the orthodontist will evaluate whether your child will need interceptive orthodontic treatment. The importance of identifying orthodontic issues at a younger age has been shown to minimize, or even eliminate, more extensive orthodontic treatment later in life. Often early orthodontic intervention can help guide proper jaw development and allow proper room for normal eruption of the permanent teeth. If you have further questions please do not hesitate to give our office a call 1-800-920-9798.

It's National Orthodontic Health Month and we want to make sure you braces are as clean and as shiny as they can be! Here are some great tips on keeping those braces sparkling!!
One tooth at a time. When you brush, take time with each individual tooth – at least 10 seconds each – and pay careful attention to the spots where your teeth touch your braces.
It’s all about the angles. Brush the tops of your teeth and braces with your brush angled down toward where they meet. Brush the bottoms of your teeth and braces with your brush angled up.
The tooth, the whole tooth, nothing but the tooth. While the front surface of your teeth may seem like the most logical to clean, it’s equally important to clean the inner surface of your teeth (tongue side) as well as the chewing surface. And be sure to clean along your gum line – a key spot for plaque buildup.
Step 1: eat, step 2: clean. While you’re in treatment, it’s important to brush after every meal. Bits of food can easily get caught between braces and teeth, and these food bits interact with bacteria in your mouth to cause decay. The longer food is in contact with your teeth, the greater opportunity for plaque to form. If you are eating somewhere that you can’t brush, thoroughly rinse your mouth with water.
Always be prepared. The easiest way to be sure you can brush after every meal is to get in the habit of taking a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss with you wherever you go. Designate a special container just for your teeth-cleaning tools and keep it in your purse, backpack, or laptop case.
Remove the moving parts. If you have elastic bands or headgear, remove these parts before you brush or floss.
Fluoride is your friend. Fluoride helps prevent cavities. Be sure to brush with fluoride toothpaste, and rinse with fluoride mouthwash.
Interproximal brushes (sometimes called proxa brushes or interdental brushes) are cone-shaped and come in very handy for reaching spots around your braces that standard brushes can’t.
Find the floss for you. Regular floss works for some patients, but others find it easier to work with a floss threader, which helps you get the floss into tight places. Other patients like an all-in-one product called Superfloss, which comes with a stiff end for easy threading, a spongy section for cleaning wide spaces, and regular floss for narrow spaces.
Make time for the pros. It’s your job to take care of the everyday cleaning. But make sure to visit your dentist regularly while in treatment, to get the deep, thorough cleaning that only a professional can provide.

Braces aren't just for kids anymore! Regardless of your age, if you've always wanted to smile with confidence, but knowing that your teeth were less than perfect held you back, getting braces might be the solution you've been looking for. A straight smile can do so much for your self-esteem, and at the office of Dr. Paula Baby and Jaime Rojas, we want to help you achieve the smile of your dreams.
In addition to the aesthetic benefits of orthodontic treatment, there are many health benefits as well. Teeth that are properly aligned are easier to clean and function more optimally when it comes to eating and speaking.
If you recognize any of these signs in your child or yourself, it might be time to schedule a consultation with Drs. Baby & Rojas.
• Early or late loss of baby teeth
• Difficulty chewing or biting
• Mouth breathing
• Sucking the thumb or fingers, or other oral habits
• Crowded, misplaced, or blocked-out teeth
• Jaws that shift, make sounds, protrude, or are recessed
• Speech difficulty
• Biting the cheek or biting into the roof of the mouth
• Protruding teeth, teeth that meet in an abnormal way, or teeth that don’t meet at all
• Grinding or clenching of teeth
• Inability to comfortably close lips
Drs. Baby & Rojas will be able to assess your orthodontic needs during your appointment and explain all the wonderful benefits you can expect to receive during your time in braces. We look forward to seeing you or your child for a consultation!
December 1st, 2011
Your dentist may have discussed with you the benefits of having healthy teeth and proper jaw alignment. Drs. Baby & Rojas will both tell you that crooked and crowded teeth are hard to clean and maintain, which can result in tooth decay, worsen gum disease and eventually lead to tooth loss.
Other orthodontic problems, specifically concerned with how the teeth bite together can contribute to abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, inefficient chewing function, excessive stress on gum tissue and the bone that support, or misalignment of the jaw joints. Orthodontic treatment with Drs. Baby & Rojas can be less costly than the additional care required to treat dental problems that arise as a result of uncorrected orthodontic problems. For most people, a beautiful smile is the most obvious benefit of orthodontics. After your braces come off, you'll feel more self-confident. To get started with orthodontic your treatment today, please contact us to schedule a consultation.
Our offices are conveniently located in Wingham and London, Ontario. We provide orthodontic care for the following communities: London, Wingham, Lucan, Exeter, Clinton, Goderich, Seaforth, Kincardine, Hanover, Brussels, Lambeth, Middlesex County.
Have a great rest of the week!
October 31st, 2011
Happy Halloween! Dr. Jaime Rojas has been putting smiles on the faces of Wingham and area people for a decade. And the smiles are beautiful. Dr. Rojas is the orthodontist who is part of Maitland Family Dental, with doctors Ray Bateman, Yang Liu and David Magee.
One day each week, usually Tuesday, Dr. Rojas and his team travel from London to the Wingham office. He’s been doing the commute for 10 years now, through good weather and bad, and wants to thank the local community for its support. The rest of the week, he works at his London office at Horton and Wharncliffe streets.
In Dr. Rojas’ opinion, he has the best of both worlds – a practice he shares with his wife, Dr. Paula Baby, who is also an orthodontist, and an opportunity to bring the latest orthodontic techniques to a community where the pace of life is different and people have a down-to-earth attitude he appreciates. And straight teeth are
important no matter where you live.
The process of getting that great smile has changed dramatically in the decade Dr. Rojas has been coming to Wingham. There are a lot more options for patients, including some that eliminate the glittering metal brackets most of us think of when
we’re considering orthodontic work.
These days, braces can be clear. There are also systems like Insignia – computer generated braces, where each bracket is designed for a particular tooth. Because the orthodontist monitors everything by computer, minor adjustments can be made, offering a precision that isn’t possible with other types of braces.
“It’s amazing what orthodontics can do,” Dr. Rojas said. He had been in a practice in Clinton, but regards his decision to accept the invitation to join the Wingham practice as “one of the best business decisions” he ever made. The dentists in the practice were welcoming, and so was the community. And the rest is history – 10 years of straight teeth, definitely something to smile about.

Now that many of the schools in London, Wingham and Goderich are back in session, Drs. Baby & Rojas would like to remind all of our patients about the importance of scheduling appointments in advance. With school, clubs, sports and family duties to consider, we know that it can be challenging to find time to visit our office this fall. In order to accommodate all of our patients’ busy schedules, it is important that you plan ahead for your appointments so that we are able to provide you with an appointment time that is convenient for you.
As always, please remember to give us advanced notice if you’re unable to make your regularly-scheduled appointment. If we receive enough notice, we might be able to schedule another patient for that time. Feel free to give us a call if you have any questions, or if you would like to schedule your fall appointment.
We’ll see you soon and hope summer is winding down nicely for all our patients!

At the office of Drs. Baby and Rojas, we know good dental health requires only a few minutes a day. We thought we’d provide some practical advice on how to improve your or your child’s smile between your visits with Drs. Baby and Rojas.
Start by brushing your teeth twice a day. Proper brushing techniques are an essential part of maintaining good oral health, as well as preventing gum disease. Brushing daily helps remove decay-causing plaque from tooth surfaces. Please consult Drs. Baby and Rojas if you would like us to review brushing techniques with you or your child. Flossing daily will also prevent plaque to build up between the teeth and prevent stains between your teeth. Research has shown the bacteria of gum disease has been linked to coronary artery disease, stroke, diabetes and memory loss. Lastly, we encourage you to throw away old toothbrushes and replace them every 2 or 3 months, or after an illness.

Each February for the past 61 years, Children's Dental Health Month has helped raise awareness about the importance of oral health. Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.
For kids wearing braces, brushing and flossing can become more difficult, requiring extra time and vigilance to remove food particles that accumulate on and between the teeth and in braces. New options for braces such as Invisalign Teen, which is removable, make it easier for kids to maintain good oral health during orthodontic treatment.
If the health of your teeth is ignored during treatment with braces, the results can be significantly compromised. Drs. Baby and Rojas are both available and happy to explain why effective brushing and flossing is one of the most critical actions needed from patients during orthodontic treatment. Have you visited our Wingham, London or Goderich office lately? Give us a call and schedule an appointment! We also invite you to connect with us on Facebook!

I am the person who will greet you at our Goderich office, book your appointments and answer your questions. I live in Goderich and am happily married with 3 children. My spare time is spent enjoying the outdoors which includes hiking, camping and going to the beach or just relaxing by the pool.

There are so many questions about orthodontics that we never ask, so Drs. Jaime Rojas and Paula Baby took some time to explain the most common concerns.
At what age should orthodontic treatment occur?
Orthodontic treatment can be started at any age. Many orthodontic problems are easier to correct if detected at an early age before jaw growth has slowed. Early treatment may mean that a patient can avoid surgery and more serious complications. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child first visit an orthodontist by age seven or earlier if a problem is detected by parents, the family dentist or the child's physician.
What is Phase I and Phase II treatment?
Phase I, or early interceptive treatment, is limited orthodontic treatment (i.e. expander, Herbst, Facemask, headgear, or partial braces) before all of the permanent teeth have erupted. Such treatment can occur between the ages of six and ten. This treatment is sometimes recommended to make more space for developing teeth, correction of crossbites, overbites, underbites, or harmful oral habits. Phase II treatment is also called comprehensive treatment, because it involves full braces when all of the permanent teeth have erupted, usually between the ages of eleven and thirteen.
Would an adult patient benefit from orthodontics?
Absolutely!! Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age. Everyone wants a beautiful and healthy smile. Between 30-40% of our patients are adults.
How does orthodontic treatment work?
Braces use steady gentle pressure to gradually move teeth into their proper positions. The brackets that are placed on your teeth and the arch wire that connects them are the main components. When the arch wire is placed into the brackets, it tries to return to its original shape. As it does so, it applies pressure to move your teeth to their new, more ideal positions.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Treatment times vary on a case-by-case basis, but the average time is from one to two years. Actual treatment time can be affected by rate of growth and severity of the correction necessary. Treatment length is also dependent upon patient compliance. Maintaining good oral hygiene and keeping regular appointments are important in keeping your treatment time on schedule.
Do braces hurt?
The placement of bands and brackets on your teeth does not hurt. Once your braces are placed and connected with the arch wires, you may feel some soreness of your teeth for one to four days. Your lips and cheeks may need one to two weeks to get used to the braces on your teeth.
Will braces interfere with playing sports?
No. It is recommended, however, that patients protect their smiles by wearing a mouth guard when participating in any sporting activity. Mouth guards are inexpensive, comfortable, and come in a variety of colors and patterns.
Will braces interfere with playing musical instruments?
No. However, there may be an initial period of adjustment. In addition, brace covers or wax can be provided to prevent discomfort.
Should I see my general dentist while I have braces?
Yes, you should continue to see your general dentist every six months for cleaning and dental checkups, or more frequently as recommended.
Got more questions? Give us a call at our office! We'd love to hear from you.

Something big is happening in the orthodontics world, and it’s no other than Damon braces, which allow your teeth to move more comfortably and easily than traditional braces. With the Damon System, achieving that perfect smile will be faster and easier than you ever thought possible.
Here’s what makes the Damon system different:
With the new Damon braces, we can achieve terrific results and finish your treatment faster. Depending on your case, this may mean saving many months of treatment! After analyzing your specific needs, we will be able to provide you with a treatment plan that will have you smiling soon! We wanted to share with you a wonderful letter that was sent to our office from the London Food Bank. This good news is thanks to all of your contributions. As you can see, it really has made a difference!
Dear Dr. Baby, Dr. Rojas and staff,
Thank you for your recent food donation to the London Food Bank.
As we experience the cold winter months the number of client visits will rise as individuals may experience the other financial challenges of heating winter clothing costs. Often our clients will pay those bills first which leaves them with very little or no money to spend on food. This is an experience common to many of our clients.
The generous citizens of London and the surrounding area, through the efforts of the London Food Bank, have in the past fed on average, approximately 2500 families per month. Throughout 2009, we saw a significant increase in the number we are assisting. We have been helping on average over 3000 families each month with our highest month being 3377. The number of individuals helped in 2009 was approximately 85,000 and roughly 35,000 of them were children and youth under the age of 18. We anticipate that this increase will unfortunately be the new norm.
Individuals can use the services of the London Food Bank once a month. Most of our clients, in fact 75%, use the food bank four times or less in a year. It is this statistic that demonstrates to us that the individuals who use this food bank do so because they need to, not because they want to.
With sincere gratitude,
London Food Bank

We have many great people and families in our practice and we wanted to introduce you to a very special young woman whom we have the privilege of knowing. Brittnei Berrisford is a full time student at the University of Guelph who, during her time off from school, travels all over the world to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Our office cares deeply about the work that Brittnei does. We will continue to support Brittnei and follow her travels in underdeveloped countries. If you would like to follow Brittnei as well, we will be posting her updates and pictures on our website and other social networks. We think that the work that Brittnei does is amazing, we look forward to seeing where else her heart takes her.

“I have had 2 kids with braces and they always feel very welcome and comfortable with all the staff”

“I really like the comfortable layout of the office and the TV’s and video games keep the kids and adults entertained. I like that some of the staff have braces or had them in the past so they could understand and appreciate the experience. Most of all I love my new smile. I was always self conscious of my crooked teeth and I always tried to hide my smile, but now I absolutely love showing it off.”
"I love how happy and cheerful they both are. The staff is amazing…. a great place to go to.”

Before I had braces I never smiled in pictures, and even tried to cover my mouth when I would laugh. I got my braces off just weeks before my wedding, and I have not stopped smiling. I am so impressed with the way my teeth look now. I was so happy with the staff that I even married the hygienist and she was so jealous of my smile in our wedding pictures that she now has braces too.”
"This office has some of the best staff that I’ve come across in all of my family’s health care experiences. The staff are always happy and enthusiastic, not to mention EXTREMELY knowledgeable. It speaks volumes about an organization when the staff seem happy to be there.”

"The office of Dr. Baby and Rojas was such a great experience for me. The staff were always very friendly and welcoming from the moment I walked into the door. The atmosphere there is very modern, and the magazines in the waiting room are current and constantly changing. My whole orthodontic treatment at this office has been amazing. Not to mention I love my new smile!"
