STORE YOUR ALIGNERS IN THEIR CASE
We highly suggest keeping your aligners in their case to prevent losing them. Keeping them in their case reduces the risk of throwing them away, or allowing easy access for your pet to turn them into a chew toy. (Which they love)
BRUSH YOUR TEETH AFTER MEALS AND SNACKS
Brushing after every meal or snack will prevent your aligners from smelling and tasting like food. And remember, never eat or drink anything but water with your aligners still inside your mouth.
EXERCISE YOUR ALIGNERS - CHEWIES
Be sure to ask our team members for chewies if they haven’t given them to you already. We suggest chewing on them for 10-15 minutes each day. This chewing exercise helps keep your trays in line and molded to your teeth.
REMIND YOURSELF TO PUT YOUR ALIGNERS BACK IN YOUR MOUTH USING TIMERS
Treatment may be prolonged if patients forget to continually place their aligners back in after a meal or snack. A timer may help you remember to put your aligners back in after eating.

Invisalign allows the freedom to eat what you want when you want with ease. But did you know that when wearing Invisalign trays you should not drink hot liquids or carbonated beverages. Hot liquids can cause warping of your trays. Coffee and tea may also stain your aligners. We also strongly advise against drinking carbonated beverages while wearing your Invisalign trays. These trays can trap sugar or acidic fluids around your teeth leading to decay. Furthermore drinking carbonated beverages can also greatly affect the integrity of the trays leading to premature deterioration. We want the best outcome for you while you are in Invisalign or any other type or orthodontic treatment and for this reason we suggest you to only drink water while wearing your Invisalign trays.

In the media you may have heard recently the flossing may not be necessary and has no effect on getting cavities or keeping gum disease away. Well, we ask that you think twice about that statement. Patients in braces or other orthodontic appliances are at risk for inflamed gums, decalcification leading to cavities due to the lack of proper brushing and floss use. We encourage all patients to continue to floss. Please take a moment to look at these images to get an idea of what a lack of oral hygiene can do. Our advice - PLEASE FLOSS in conjunction with proper brushing.

Some interesting Braces Facts!
Braces go WAY back :)
Braces have been around for a long time – with the first design being created in 1728. But due to huge advancements in technology and materials, today’s teeth straightening systems are super comfortable and efficient – some are practically invisible thanks to Invisalign’s Clear Aligners.
The Science Connection
Did you know that some wires used in orthodontic cases were developed by NASA – the wires have a shape memory so they won’t become distorted due to body heat and/or pressure.
Lighnting Isn't a Concern
Braces don’t increase your odds of being hit by lightning! Braces aren’t magnetic and won’t set-off any metal detectors.
Age is not a factor
You are never too old to wear orthodontic braces. Adult orthodontic patients make up a large segment of the population straightening their teeth. It’s never too late to have the smile you’ve always dreamed of.
Something to Think About..
100% of Orthodontists are Dentists – but only 5% of Dentists are Orthodontists. Having a consultation with a Certified Orthodontist in enables you to get a complete and accurate diagnosis from someone trained to deal specifically with malocclusion and other bite and skeletal issues.
Wear Those Retainers
Nearly 25% of orthodontic patients have to repeat treatment because they failed to wear their retainer as instructed by an orthodontist!
What Makes us Smile
Want to know what makes an Orthodontist smile – You wearing your retainer.

When considering orthodontic care for yourself or a family member it can feel overwhelming and you may not be sure what questions to ask. You should know that not all dental practitioners are created equal. Some specialize in different areas of care. Orthodontists receive additional university training, education and certification in their field of expertise. Many practitioners who provide orthodontic treatment do not have additional orthodontic training from an accredited university, yet they still may refer to themselves as an orthodontist. We believe you should be informed when deciding who you will chose to do your orthodontic work.
The attached image contains a list of questions to consider when looking for an orthodontic provider.
As always our team is ready to answer any questions you may have.
Many people are misinformed when it comes to orthodontic providers and treatment. Please help us spread the word and share this blog post with your friends and family.

Just as Black Friday kicks off the holiday shopping season, Giving Tuesday is the opening day of the giving season. In the spirit of the holiday season, it gives us a chance to simply “give back” and do some good for others. www.givingtuesday.org
Our office is using Giving Tuesday to kick-start (pun intended) our participation in “Give Cold Feet the Boot” this holiday season. The Give Cold Feet the Boot Campaign, which is run by United Way’s GenNext (www.gennextuw.ca), collects money and boots to help keep the feet of the children in our community toasty warm this winter season.
Also, in support of “Giving Tuesday” we want to see your “Unselfies”. Everyone is a pro at the “selfie” but what is an #unselfie? An Unselfie is way to show support for Giving Tuesday. You take a picture of yourself holding a written explanation of how or why you “give back”, tag it #unselfie and #givingtuesday and upload it to Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. For every “Unselfie” emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org or posted on our Facebook Page we will donate $1.00 to GenNext’s Program “Give Cold Feet the Boot.”
Here’s an example of our hygienist Mel’s #unselfie. Further examples of unselfies can be found at: www.mashable.com/2013/12/03/giving-tuesday-unselfies. We will be collecting and posting unselfies until December 12th.
#embracethegivingseason #givingTuesday #unselfie
We won’t stop there, our office be collecting new boots until December 12th at each of our offices. No child should go without proper footwear this winter season and our team will do what we can to help the children in our community. Our Boot Drive details are as follows:

We are back from holidays! Just a reminder that we are running our "Let's Can Hunger" Food Bank campaign throughout the summer. Our goal is to collect 300 items for the Food bank. All patients who bring in a donation will be awarded 2 Smile Miles per visit. Let's come together and "Can Hunger." The need for the food bank during the summer is just as crucial as any other time of year. Every little bit helps.
July 2nd, 2014
Summer time foods to avoid with braces!
Getting the most from your orthodontic treatment means temporarily altering your diet to ensure you do not break brackets, bend wires which could in turn increase the time you may spend in braces. The day braces go on our staff would have reviewed foods you can and cannot eat with braces. With summer here and barbeques and many other types of activities happening you may forget some big “no no” foods with braces. Please take a look at our list and try to avoid these foods. Your braces with thank you!
Corn on the cob (you CAN cut the corn off the cob and enjoy)
Uncooked vegetables such as carrots, celery
Apples! No biting into apples, if you would like to enjoy simply cut into bit size pieces
Hard Candy, Gum etc.
It’s not just the hard, crunchy foods you should avoid. Sweet sugary drinks can cause sugar to build up beneath the braces and cause tooth decay, it is best to avoid these types of drinks.
We are not asking you to give up all your favourite things; we just ask you make some necessary adjustments to ensure the brackets remain in place. Broken brackets can increase treatment time and we want to reveal your perfect smile as soon as possible!
Check out our Pinterest page for some braces friendly recipes. http://www.pinterest.com/babyrojasortho/braces-friendly-recipes/

Let’s CAN hunger together!
The Food Bank is a much needed service in our communities. Food drives often run during Christmas, but many do not realize the need for donations is even higher in the summer. Because of this, we’ve decided to put on a summer food drive. “LET’S CAN HUNGER” in our communities.
Drop off bins will be located at each office. One donation or two, large or small it doesn’t matter - any amount helps!
Some of their most needed non-perishable food categories are:
- Canned fruit
- Canned vegetables
- Canned meats,
- Fish, and meat alternatives (legumes, peanut butter etc.)
- Brown beans (in tomato sauce)
- Baby food & formula
- Pasta, rice
- Special diet foods (gluten free, lactose free, etc.)
We hope to collect a total of 300 items for the London, Goderich and Wingham food banks during June, July and August. Be sure to watch our goal meter on our Facebook Page. If we hit our goal, watch out, we just may have a fun give-a-way planned J
All Smile Miles holders who bring in a food drive donation will be awarded 2 Smile Miles, be sure to show one of our staff your donation.
Thank you for all continued support!

• Replace your toothbrush at least every 3-4 months or when the bristles are frayed or worn.
• Always replace your toothbrush after a cold or flu.
• Rinse your toothbrush with water to remove toothp...aste and debris after each use, and store upright to air-dry.
• Never cover the toothbrush or place in a closed container while still wet, as this will allow for the growth of more bacteria.
• If you or a family member has been ill, be sure to throw away your old toothbrush and get a new one to avoid re-contaminating yourself with germs every time you brush.
• Never store household members’ toothbrushes together in a drawer or cabinet.

You may have heard of “Insignia” braces or you may be one of the lucky ones who are wearing an Insignia Smile, or currently have Insignia braces. Dr. Baby and Dr. Rojas were the first orthodontists in London to bring this ground breaking technology to our patients. Ormco Corporation, the developer of the Insignia system, has recently been acknowledged for its excellence and has been awarded an American Technology Award in the Health & Medical Technologies category. We congratulate Ormco on their success and are very thankful we are able to bring this technology to our patients. Follow this link for more information on Insignia and what it can do for you.

Early childhood cavities are the most common reason for sedating children at the dental office. The occurrence of childhood cavities is on the rise. The reasons for this are many and can include more relaxed parenting styles, hectic daily schedules and drinks containing large amounts of sugar.
As parents we want the very best for our children and can reduce the risk of childhood cavities. There are many things we can do to prevent cavities. Below is a list of some things you should DO NOT do and DO to help reduce the risk of your child developing cavities.
· Put your child to bed with a sippy cup or bottle, if you child must have one, use water only
· Do not allow your child to become a “bottle walker” (walk around with a sippy cup or bottle)
· Do not use sippy cups or bottles to “quiet” your child
· Except at meal and designated snack times, bottles and sippy cups should ONLY contain water
· DO NOT DIP soothers in sugar or sweetened substances like honey or syrup
· DO VISIT THE DENTIST EARLY. It is suggested your child visit the dentist by age one and regular dental visits yearly should continue after that.
· DO “CLEAN” your child’s teeth as soon as they erupt. Twice a day. Parents should help with or do at least one cleaning until the child is about 7 years old.
· Do lift the child’s lip regularly to check the gums closely. If you see any white lines or brown spots visit the dentist immediately.
· DO use a (clean) soft washcloth if you child is uncooperative with a toothbrush. This will help to remove any plaque that is present.
· DO USE a small, soft toothbrush and water to clean teeth. (Hot water with soften bristles) Use no toothpaste or a non-fluoride toothpaste until age 3 and then use a small amount of fluoride toothpaste 2 times per day for 2 minutes until age 7.
For more information please visit the Middlesex-London Health Unit’s Website. It provides a great deal of information on this topic. Brochures on Early Childhood Tooth Decay are available at our office as well.

Malocclusion of the teeth is a term frequently used at our office. Ever wonder what the orthodontist or another staff member means when using this term? Malocclusion simply means the teeth are not aligned properly.
Malocclusion is most often hereditary, which means the condition is passed down through families. There may be a difference between the size of the upper and lower jaws or between jaw and tooth size, resulting in overcrowding of teeth or in abnormal bite patterns.
Other causes of malocclusion include:
- Childhood habits such as thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, pacifier use beyond age 3, and prolonged use of a bottle
- Extra teeth, lost teeth, impacted teeth, or abnormally shaped teeth
- Ill-fitting dental fillings or crowns
- Misalignment of jaw fractures after a severe injury
- Tumors of the mouth and jaw
When it comes to malocclusion there are different categories;
- Class 1 malocclusion is the most common. The bite is normal, but the upper teeth slightly overlap the lower teeth.
- Class 2 malocclusion, also called overbite, occurs when the upper jaw and teeth severely overlap the bottom jaw and teeth.
- Class 3 malocclusion, also called underbite, occurs when the lower jaw protrudes or juts forward, causing the lower jaw and teeth to overlap the upper jaw and teeth.
Some symptoms of malocclusion include;
- Abnormal alignment of teeth
- Abnormal appearance of the face
- Difficulty or discomfort when biting or chewing
- Speech difficulties (rare) including lisp
- Mouth breathing
By treating moderate or severe malocclusion, the teeth are easier to clean and there is less risk of tooth decay and periodontal diseases (gingivitis or periodontitis). Treatment eliminates strain on the teeth, jaws, and muscles, which lessens the risk of breaking a tooth and may reduce symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorders.
The goal at our office is to correct the positioning of the teeth with braces or other appliances.

Last year we received a request from one our patient families to help out with the “The Cinderella Project” and we were thrilled to jump on board to support this fantastic cause.
Do you remember your Grade 8 or High School graduation? How about the dress and accessories you wore or the girl you took and how special she looked when you picked her up?
Every young girl deserves to feel that good when celebrating their achievement of graduating from elementary or high school. Unfortunately, that isn’t always financially possible for everyone. We are also very aware of the recent closures of the industries in and around our community and how that will increase the need for assistance.
Again this year ‘The Cinderella Project’ will be making available to the girls in our community dresses, shoes, clutches, fingernail polish & bling - anything that will make their night perfect.
We are hoping you, your friends and family will take time to check your closets, and donate any unneeded dresses and prom accessories. Dresses (and accessories) can be dropped off at any of our three locations until February 28th. We will take care of the rest.
The dresses should be gently used and suitable for either graduation (public or secondary), or prom. Unfortunately, wedding dresses cannot be accepted. The Cinderella project does offer garment bags to the girls when they pick up their dresses, but if you have one that you could spare, it would be greatly appreciated.
For more info on The Cinderella Project please click the link below:
Last year we were thrilled to donate approximately 200 dresses and many accessories to the Cinderella Project.
We appreciate your support and say thank you on behalf of all of the beautiful girls that will be attending graduation/prom this June.

Important Information for Patients with Cold Sores
Cold Sores are a fact of life for some people. The virus that causes cold sores is herpes simplex 1 and can lay dormant in one’s body for years. When the cold sore virus strikes, you will experience blisters on the lips and possibly even nose. These little blisters can be caused by stress, sun, fatigue, cold weather or even physical irritation of the lips (such as a visit to the dentist). Visiting the dentist or orthodontist when a cold sore is present can cause discomfort, irritate the lesion, (which can prolong the course and increase the severity of the infection), as well as spread the herpes virus to members of the dental team. If you have a cold sore, it is highly recommended that you avoid non-emergency dental treatment. Your comfort is our top concern and we ask that you reschedule your appointment until the lesion disappears, which is usually about 2 weeks.
More information on the cold sore virus can be found at: http://bodyandhealth.canada.com/channel_condition_info_details.asp?disease_id=33&channel_id=1029&relation_id=87442

A question we commonly get asked is “When should my child first see an orthodontist?.” The American and Canadian Associations of Orthodontists recommends that all children see an orthodontist by the age seven. At this age, the orthodontist will evaluate whether your child will need interceptive orthodontic treatment. The importance of identifying orthodontic issues at a younger age has been shown to minimize, or even eliminate, more extensive orthodontic treatment later in life. Often early orthodontic intervention can help guide proper jaw development and allow proper room for normal eruption of the permanent teeth. If you have further questions please do not hesitate to give our office a call 1-800-920-9798.

It's National Orthodontic Health Month and we want to make sure you braces are as clean and as shiny as they can be! Here are some great tips on keeping those braces sparkling!!
One tooth at a time. When you brush, take time with each individual tooth – at least 10 seconds each – and pay careful attention to the spots where your teeth touch your braces.
It’s all about the angles. Brush the tops of your teeth and braces with your brush angled down toward where they meet. Brush the bottoms of your teeth and braces with your brush angled up.
The tooth, the whole tooth, nothing but the tooth. While the front surface of your teeth may seem like the most logical to clean, it’s equally important to clean the inner surface of your teeth (tongue side) as well as the chewing surface. And be sure to clean along your gum line – a key spot for plaque buildup.
Step 1: eat, step 2: clean. While you’re in treatment, it’s important to brush after every meal. Bits of food can easily get caught between braces and teeth, and these food bits interact with bacteria in your mouth to cause decay. The longer food is in contact with your teeth, the greater opportunity for plaque to form. If you are eating somewhere that you can’t brush, thoroughly rinse your mouth with water.
Always be prepared. The easiest way to be sure you can brush after every meal is to get in the habit of taking a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss with you wherever you go. Designate a special container just for your teeth-cleaning tools and keep it in your purse, backpack, or laptop case.
Remove the moving parts. If you have elastic bands or headgear, remove these parts before you brush or floss.
Fluoride is your friend. Fluoride helps prevent cavities. Be sure to brush with fluoride toothpaste, and rinse with fluoride mouthwash.
Interproximal brushes (sometimes called proxa brushes or interdental brushes) are cone-shaped and come in very handy for reaching spots around your braces that standard brushes can’t.
Find the floss for you. Regular floss works for some patients, but others find it easier to work with a floss threader, which helps you get the floss into tight places. Other patients like an all-in-one product called Superfloss, which comes with a stiff end for easy threading, a spongy section for cleaning wide spaces, and regular floss for narrow spaces.
Make time for the pros. It’s your job to take care of the everyday cleaning. But make sure to visit your dentist regularly while in treatment, to get the deep, thorough cleaning that only a professional can provide.

Our team knows that while in orthodontic treatment, it is important to maintain proper oral health. According to a recent study by the British Columbia Dental Hygienists' Association, periodontal disease is linked to not only your oral health, but also the health of other body functions.
It is commonly known that proper oral health is important for many everyday functions, such as eating, talking, and kissing. New correlations have now been found linking poor oral health and cardio-vascular disease, diabetes, respiratory problems, and other systemic diseases. "Patients who have had previous infections of the heart valve may need antibiotics before having dental work done," says Cardiologist Dr. Nisha D'Mello of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.
Have you been brushing, flossing, and visiting us for your regularly scheduled appointments? If not, give us a call! Also, be sure to visit your general dentist every six months for an oral exam to check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue.
Have a great week!

April 23rd, 2010
There are so many questions about orthodontics that we never ask, so Drs. Jaime Rojas and Paula Baby took some time to explain the most common concerns.
At what age should orthodontic treatment occur?
Orthodontic treatment can be started at any age. Many orthodontic problems are easier to correct if detected at an early age before jaw growth has slowed. Early treatment may mean that a patient can avoid surgery and more serious complications. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child first visit an orthodontist by age seven or earlier if a problem is detected by parents, the family dentist or the child's physician.
What is Phase I and Phase II treatment?
Phase I, or early interceptive treatment, is limited orthodontic treatment (i.e. expander, Herbst, Facemask, headgear, or partial braces) before all of the permanent teeth have erupted. Such treatment can occur between the ages of six and ten. This treatment is sometimes recommended to make more space for developing teeth, correction of crossbites, overbites, underbites, or harmful oral habits. Phase II treatment is also called comprehensive treatment, because it involves full braces when all of the permanent teeth have erupted, usually between the ages of eleven and thirteen.
Would an adult patient benefit from orthodontics?
Absolutely!! Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age. Everyone wants a beautiful and healthy smile. Between 30-40% of our patients are adults.
How does orthodontic treatment work?
Braces use steady gentle pressure to gradually move teeth into their proper positions. The brackets that are placed on your teeth and the arch wire that connects them are the main components. When the arch wire is placed into the brackets, it tries to return to its original shape. As it does so, it applies pressure to move your teeth to their new, more ideal positions.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Treatment times vary on a case-by-case basis, but the average time is from one to two years. Actual treatment time can be affected by rate of growth and severity of the correction necessary. Treatment length is also dependent upon patient compliance. Maintaining good oral hygiene and keeping regular appointments are important in keeping your treatment time on schedule.
Do braces hurt?
The placement of bands and brackets on your teeth does not hurt. Once your braces are placed and connected with the arch wires, you may feel some soreness of your teeth for one to four days. Your lips and cheeks may need one to two weeks to get used to the braces on your teeth.
Will braces interfere with playing sports?
No. It is recommended, however, that patients protect their smiles by wearing a mouth guard when participating in any sporting activity. Mouth guards are inexpensive, comfortable, and come in a variety of colors and patterns.
Will braces interfere with playing musical instruments?
No. However, there may be an initial period of adjustment. In addition, brace covers or wax can be provided to prevent discomfort.
Should I see my general dentist while I have braces?
Yes, you should continue to see your general dentist every six months for cleaning and dental checkups, or more frequently as recommended.
Got more questions? Give us a call at our office! We'd love to hear from you.

We wanted to share with you a wonderful letter that was sent to our office from the London Food Bank. This good news is thanks to all of your contributions. As you can see, it really has made a difference!
Dear Dr. Baby, Dr. Rojas and staff,
Thank you for your recent food donation to the London Food Bank.
As we experience the cold winter months the number of client visits will rise as individuals may experience the other financial challenges of heating winter clothing costs. Often our clients will pay those bills first which leaves them with very little or no money to spend on food. This is an experience common to many of our clients.
The generous citizens of London and the surrounding area, through the efforts of the London Food Bank, have in the past fed on average, approximately 2500 families per month. Throughout 2009, we saw a significant increase in the number we are assisting. We have been helping on average over 3000 families each month with our highest month being 3377. The number of individuals helped in 2009 was approximately 85,000 and roughly 35,000 of them were children and youth under the age of 18. We anticipate that this increase will unfortunately be the new norm.
Individuals can use the services of the London Food Bank once a month. Most of our clients, in fact 75%, use the food bank four times or less in a year. It is this statistic that demonstrates to us that the individuals who use this food bank do so because they need to, not because they want to.
With sincere gratitude,
London Food Bank
