Amazing Patient

October 5th, 2016

We have our share of outstanding patients in and out of the office. Eden is no exception. Check out this article written up about Eden who puts the needs of others before her own by collecting and donating items to those in need. She has turned this into an annual event, using her birthday to collect items needed. She has supported many different causes in her 12 years, from Teddy Bears for kids in Haiti to collecting pennies to reforest a park! We are so proud of you Eden and hope you keep up the great work. We look forward to seeing what organization you chose to help for your 13th birthday!

To find out who else Eden has helped please visit the full article in The School Age Children Resource. If looking at the article on the digital version you can quickly find it by searching for pages 98-99. It is Page 97 in the hard copy available all over the city. This publication is given out to all SK and JK students and contains a wealth of information. The website parentguide.ca provides pick up locations.

Importance of an open airway in growing children

September 10th, 2016

One of the most common abnormalities in a child’s facial growth and development is caused by a compromised airway or, simply stated, the inability to breathe properly through the nose. Children who cannot breathe well through their nose will tend to breathe through their mouth. This sets up a chain of events which may severely impact not only the health of a child but also the way a child’s facial features develop and ultimately the way a child looks as an adult. The most common causes of altered breathing are:

  • Enlarged adenoids
  • Enlarged tonsils
  • Deviated septum (nasal obstruction)
  • Allergies
  • Chronic sinus infections

The effects of a compromised airway on the growth of a child are revealed in many ways. The tongue often positions itself snugly in the lower jaw to allow a child to breathe more readily through the mouth. This in turn changes the growth of the lower jaw so that it grows more vertically and makes the face look longer.

At the same time, since nasal breathing is severely compromised, the upper jaw and midface (the nasal bones, cheek bones, and bones supporting the tissue of the face) fail to develop at a normal rate because the natural growth stimulant of air flow through the nose is absent. This results in a deficiency of growth of the upper jaw and midface which, added to the long facial growth from the lower jaw, directly impacts the facial balance and beauty of a child and later as an adult.

As parents, we often see the signs of airway problems however they often go unnoticed. Here are a few common symptoms of airway problems:

  • Mouth breathing – signs are dry/chapped lips which stay apart at rest and red, inflamed gums
  • Venous pooling beneath the eyes – dark circles beneath the eyes
  • Change in head posture – head postures forward and/or tipping the forehead backwards
  • Tonsil and adenoid problems – Chronic sinus problems, throat problems
  • Snoring – children do not usually snore
  • Loud grinding of teeth during sleep
  • Bed wetting
  • Reflux in the eustachion tube – can lead to inner ear infections

Why is it important to recognize and treat airway obstruction?

Over time, if a child is not getting enough quality sleep, he or she does not acquire sufficient amounts of oxygen to aid in normal brain and body development.  The child is more likely to be diagnosed later in life with health conditions such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and childhood obesity.  Studies have shown decreased airways in growing children can also lead to other behavioral problems such as restlessness, aggressive behavior,  excessive daytime sleepiness and poor test performance. Patients who grow up with untreated, chronic sleep apnea are also more likely to having learning disabilities, behavioral problems and metabolic problems.

As children aren’t able to identify the problem on their own, it’s crucial for parents to pay close attention to their children’s sleep habits and daytime behavior. We are here to help bring these possible issues to light so we can work with you and your child to provide the care your child needs and deserves.

Please Do Not Forget to Floss!

August 16th, 2016

In the media you may have heard recently the flossing may not be necessary and has no effect on getting cavities or keeping gum disease away. Well, we ask that you think twice about that statement. Patients in braces or other orthodontic appliances are at risk for inflamed gums, decalcification leading to cavities due to the lack of proper brushing and floss use. We encourage all patients to continue to floss. Please take a moment to look at these images to get an idea of what a lack of oral hygiene can do. Our advice - PLEASE FLOSS in conjunction with proper brushing.

Braces Facts

May 12th, 2016

Some interesting Braces Facts!

Braces go WAY back :)

Braces have been around for a long time – with the first design being created in 1728. But due to huge advancements in technology and materials, today’s teeth straightening systems are super comfortable and efficient – some are practically invisible thanks to Invisalign’s Clear Aligners.

The Science Connection

Did you know that some wires used in orthodontic cases were developed by NASA – the wires have a shape memory so they won’t become distorted due to body heat and/or pressure.

Lighnting Isn't a Concern

Braces don’t increase your odds of being hit by lightning! Braces aren’t magnetic and won’t set-off any metal detectors.

Age is not a factor

You are never too old to wear orthodontic braces. Adult orthodontic patients make up a large segment of the population straightening their teeth. It’s never too late to have the smile you’ve always dreamed of.

Something to Think About..

100% of Orthodontists are Dentists – but only 5% of Dentists are Orthodontists. Having a consultation with a Certified Orthodontist in enables you to get a complete and accurate diagnosis from someone trained to deal specifically with malocclusion and other bite and skeletal issues.

Wear Those Retainers

Nearly 25% of orthodontic patients have to repeat treatment because they failed to wear their retainer as instructed by an orthodontist!

What Makes us Smile

Want to know what makes an Orthodontist smile – You wearing your retainer.

We are Proud Sponsors!

May 10th, 2016

Dr. Baby and Dr. Rojas are once again proud sponsor of our patient Sarah and her soccer team U14 Girls Lambeth FC Storm. We wish the girls the very best on their 2016 soccer season. We will post update on their season as we receive them. Go Storm Go!

Dr. Baby and Dr. Rojas were amazing throughout the whole process and I'm so glad that I got to work with orthodontists that I trust. Getting braces was truly worthwhile. Thanks again!"

Questions You Should Ask Before Getting Braces

March 7th, 2016

When considering orthodontic care for yourself or a family member it can feel overwhelming and you may not be sure what questions to ask. You should know that not all dental practitioners are created equal. Some specialize in different areas of care. Orthodontists receive additional university training, education and certification in their field of expertise. Many practitioners who provide orthodontic treatment do not have additional orthodontic training from an accredited university, yet they still may refer to themselves as an orthodontist. We believe you should be informed when deciding who you will chose to do your orthodontic work.

The attached image contains a list of questions to consider when looking for an orthodontic provider.

As always our team is ready to answer any questions you may have.

Many people are misinformed when it comes to orthodontic providers and treatment. Please help us spread the word and share this blog post with your friends and family.

Tips for Retainer Care - London, Orthodontist

January 12th, 2016

Retainers are an important part of your orthodontic treatment!

Here are 7 easy steps for taking care of your retainer!!

1. Wear your retainers all of the time, except when eating or brushing. If you are unsure how often to wear your retainers be sure to ask a team member next time you are in.

2. When your retainers are not in your mouth, ALWAYS keep them in your retainer case. Not in a napkin or lose in your pocket, this is sure way to throw out or break them.

3. Do not leave your retainers in a really hot or cold car.

4. Keep your retainers away from pets, dogs LOVE them.

5. Clean your retainers by holding them carefully and brushing with a toothbrush and toothpaste. If you have an essix (clear retainer) be sure to ask our team on current cleaning recommendations.

6. Do not place retainers in the microwave or in boiling water

7. If you have any questions be sure to ask us.

LOL! Halloween is almost here! Be sure to brush and floss and if you have braces be sure to avoid hard, crunchy, chewy candy! These items can break brackets and bend wires, which can increase your time spent in braces - now that's scary!!

Regular Checkups with Your Dentist

There is nothing "cute" about gingivitis. Be sure to visit your dentist regularly while you are in braces for regular checkups and cleanings. Help us reach our goal!

July 7th, 2014

We are back from holidays! Just a reminder that we are running our "Let's Can Hunger" Food Bank campaign throughout the summer. Our goal is to collect 300 items for the Food bank. All patients who bring in a donation will be awarded 2 Smile Miles per visit. Let's come together and "Can Hunger." The need for the food bank during the summer is just as crucial as any other time of year. Every little bit helps.

Summer is here! Summer foods to avoid with braces!

July 2nd, 2014

Summer time foods to avoid with braces!

Getting the most from your orthodontic treatment means temporarily altering your diet to ensure you do not break brackets, bend wires which could in turn increase the time you may spend in braces. The day braces go on our staff would have reviewed foods you can and cannot eat with braces. With summer here and barbeques and many other types of activities happening you may forget some big “no no” foods with braces. Please take a look at our list and try to avoid these foods. Your braces with thank you!

Corn on the cob (you CAN cut the corn off the cob and enjoy)

Uncooked vegetables such as carrots, celery

Apples! No biting into apples, if you would like to enjoy simply cut into bit size pieces

Hard Candy, Gum etc.

It’s not just the hard, crunchy foods you should avoid. Sweet sugary drinks can cause sugar to build up beneath the braces and cause tooth decay, it is best to avoid these types of drinks.

We are not asking you to give up all your favourite things; we just ask you make some necessary adjustments to ensure the brackets remain in place. Broken brackets can increase treatment time and we want to reveal your perfect smile as soon as possible!

Check out our Pinterest page for some braces friendly recipes. http://www.pinterest.com/babyrojasortho/braces-friendly-recipes/

Let's Can Hunger Together!

June 22nd, 2014

Let’s CAN hunger together!

The Food Bank is a much needed service in our communities.  Food drives often run during Christmas, but many do not realize the need for donations is even higher in the summer.  Because of this, we’ve decided to put on a summer food drive.   “LET’S CAN HUNGER” in our communities.

Drop off bins will be located at each office.  One donation or two, large or small it doesn’t matter - any amount helps!

Some of their most needed non-perishable food categories are:

  • Canned fruit
  • Canned vegetables
  • Canned meats,
  • Fish, and meat alternatives (legumes, peanut butter etc.)
  • Brown beans (in tomato sauce)
  • Baby food & formula
  • Pasta, rice
  • Special diet foods (gluten free, lactose free, etc.)

We hope to collect a total of 300 items for the London, Goderich and Wingham food banks during June, July and August.  Be sure to watch our goal meter on our Facebook Page. If we hit our goal, watch out, we just may have a fun give-a-way planned J

All Smile Miles holders who bring in a food drive donation will be awarded 2 Smile Miles, be sure to show one of our staff your donation.

Thank you for all continued support!

Dr. Baby, Dr. Rojas and staff

Meet Josh Our Patient With a Cause!

May 25th, 2014

Josh Pritchard - Crohn’s and Colitis Canada’s Gutsy Walk

Joshua was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease one week before Christmas 2011 at the age of 8.  He had lost weight, was very lethargic, looked pale and had stomach pains. For almost 2 years it was a constant battle with daily medication and vitamins to try and make Joshua feel good enough to get through the day. It wasn't working, he wasn't growing at all. Then we tried yet another medication.  I am happy to say that these last 6 months Joshua has been feeling really good. You can see it in his passion for hockey thismpast winter. He didn't miss one practice or game this past season due to his disease. He gave it his all.

Joshua's doctors at the Children’s Hospital have him spend all day, every 8 weeks, in the hospital for an IV infusion of medication. He misses a day of school but it does have a positive effect. This can be a long term medication he will have to take to keep him feeling good but only if his body agrees to it. In return, there are always possible side effects that may occur in the future. This is why WE NEED TO FIND A CURE and we are turning to all of you.

Joshua and his team have walked the last 2 years in the Gutsy Walk and on Sunday, June 8th, 2014 Joshua and his team will be participating at the “Crohn’s and Colitis Canada’s Gutsy Walk” again. These much-needed funds that are raised will support critical research and education to find cures for Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis and improve the lives of children and adults affected by these chronic diseases. This cause is very important, so check out Joshua's link and be GUTSY.

Canada has one of the highest rates for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis in the world and those rates are increasing.

Most alarming, the number of new cases of Crohn’s Disease in Canadian children has almost doubled since 1995.

Crohn's and colitis are lifelong diseases that can have a devastating impact on quality of life, elevate the risk of colorectal cancer, and in the case of Crohn’s Disease, shorten life expectancy.

If interested in support Joshua’s Journey please visit www.gutsywalk.ca, then click on “Pledge Participant” and either search for Joshua Pritchard or Team Name Joshua’s Journey

Good vs Bad Brushing

April 10th, 2014

Brushing and flossing is essential to dental health for every individual, especially those with braces. Patients with braces should take special care to ensure that they are properly and frequently brushing and flossing. This is because bra ces create extra areas for food and bacteria to collect. Failure to properly clean the teeth and braces can lead to significant consequences for a patient’s oral health. Take a look a these photos.

Cold or Flu Recently?

January 22nd, 2014

If the flu bug or cold bug have caught you lately, be sure to replace your toothbrush!
The American Dental American Association of Orthodontists also recommends the following toothbrush care tips:

• Replace your toothbrush at least every 3-4 months or when the bristles are frayed or worn.

• Always replace your toothbrush after a cold or flu.

• Rinse your toothbrush with water to remove toothp...aste and debris after each use, and store upright to air-dry.

• Never cover the toothbrush or place in a closed container while still wet, as this will allow for the growth of more bacteria.

• If you or a family member has been ill, be sure to throw away your old toothbrush and get a new one to avoid re-contaminating yourself with germs every time you brush.

• Never store household members’ toothbrushes together in a drawer or cabinet.

HELP! I have braces and I don't know what to eat!

October 22nd, 2013

HELP!!! What can I eat with braces??

The best foods to eat with braces are those that are not high in sugar and do not require excessive chewing. For breakfast, try eggs, yogurt, bacon, cottage cheese or oatmeal. Lunch may steer toward a banana rather than an apple, soft sandwich, soup or a salad without nuts, and a glass of water. Avoid fruit juices and pop as these are very acidic.

Post Adjustment Foods

After an adjustment occurs, the teeth may be sore and sensitive for a day or two. During this time, it is best to eat soft foods. Examples include:

  • Pudding
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Soup
  • Ice cream
  • Cottage cheese
  • Pancakes
  • Pasta

Foods to Avoid

According to the American Dental Association, anyone who wears braces – whether fixed or removable – should avoid excessive snacking and should aim to eat a healthy and balanced diet. It is also important to avoid foods that could cause damage to the braces, such as:

  • Hard candies
  • Gum
  • Nuts
  • Popcorn
  • Certain raw vegetables (for example, carrots)
  • Crusty bread

No matter what you eat with braces it is important to keep the crevices between the teeth and around the braces very clean. That means brushing and flossing after meals to prevent the build-up of plaque and decay. Not only can failing to do so damage the teeth, but it can also cause discoloration.

Over the counter pain medication can be used to help with any discomfort you may have after your adjustment appointment. Sometimes, taking over the counter pain medication before your adjustment appointment may help as well.

If you have any concerns or questions about foods to avoid please do not hesitate to contact our office. 1-800-920-9798 or visit our website www.londonbraces.com

Back to School Braces Friendly Lunches!

September 5th, 2013

Back to School Braces Friendly Lunches!

How is everyone’s first few days of school going? Stuck on some “braces friendly” lunch ideas? Well we have some answers and helpful hints for you!

Foods to Avoid!

Foods that can stick to or damage your child’s braces should be avoided, such as;

· Soft, chewy, and sticky candy that can adhere to brackets and wires

· Cakes, cookies, brownies, or other sugar-loaded treats Nuts, hard candy, and popcorn

· Sodas, fruit juices, and similarly high-acid beverages

Foods that are mom and orthodontist approved!

To stay strong and healthy, your children’s teeth need a steady supply of calcium, phosphate, vitamin D, and other minerals and nutrients, which can be found in foods like;

· Chicken, turkey, and beef, especially in lunch-meat form, which is easier on your child’s braces.

· Milk, sugar-free yogurt, and other dairy products

· Fruits like bananas and peeled-apples

· Drink plenty of water.

Here are some other treats for meals-on-the-go:

  • Banana slices, grape halves, and thinly cut (peeled) apples (dip them all in a bit of
lemon juice to keep them from browning)
  • Canned peaches or pears, fruit cocktail and Mandarin orange slices
  • Applesauce or any of the mixed fruit “sauces” in individual servings
  • Thin carrot-curls made with a scraper, plus a small container of grated cheese or
hummus, with torn-up fresh pita bread for scooping
  • Individual pudding and yogurt cups

Post Adjustment Lunches Ideas

After adjustment appointments, your child’s teeth may be especially sensitive. Sandwiches and other normally acceptable foods that require a lot of chewing should be avoided for the next day or two. Foods that require minimal chewing and discomfort include;

  • Soup/Chili
  • Pasta
  • Pudding

Though challenging, packing a lunch that agrees with your children’s braces and smiles is less difficult when you plan ahead. Please visit the links below for more ideas.

Have Any Pennies Laying Around??

July 17th, 2013

If you haven't heard we are collecting pennies for "The Waterschool Project" Check out the full details below!

Dr. Baby, Dr. Rojas and team would like to bring awareness to a cause that the office has supported for many years, “The Waterschool”.

When we run our tap to brush our teeth, for a glass of water, or to a fill up a pot to boil your pasta, we don’t always think about the people of developing countries who do not have that luxury. Many people in rural areas and in developing countries draw their drinking water mainly from surface sources such as ponds, rivers and lakes. These same sources are used by cattle and other livestock and for bathing, washing clothes and other domestic uses. Even when improved sources are provided (bore holes, rain water harvesting, etc.), the water is usually contaminated during collection, transportation and storage. The Waterschool educates the people of this by using a three step process which ensures clean water through existing agencies in the beneficiary area. The Waterschool is currently working in Uganda and Kenya and has worked in Haiti in the past.

Over the summer months our office will be collecting pennies in support of this cause. All penny donations will be matched by the doctors and donated to The Waterschool and its initiatives. It is amazing; a $10 donation can help provide clean water to one child for a LIFETIME!

All three of our office locations are happy to take pennies that you may have laying around off your hands. Water jugs will be set up at each office location for this purpose. Please remember every penny helps! Our office is open to the public to bring in their pennies, not just our patients and families so please spread the word! You can also help by donating any current Smiles Miles to this cause. If you would like to donate your Smile Miles please email Tricia tricia@londonbraces.com for further information.

What is a Malocclusion??

March 26th, 2013

Malocclusion of the teeth is a term frequently used at our office. Ever wonder what the orthodontist or another staff member means when using this term? Malocclusion simply means the teeth are not aligned properly.

Malocclusion is most often hereditary, which means the condition is passed down through families. There may be a difference between the size of the upper and lower jaws or between jaw and tooth size, resulting in overcrowding of teeth or in abnormal bite patterns.

Other causes of malocclusion include:

  • Childhood habits such as thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, pacifier use beyond age 3, and prolonged use of a bottle
  • Extra teeth, lost teeth, impacted teeth, or abnormally shaped teeth
  • Ill-fitting dental fillings or crowns
  • Misalignment of jaw fractures after a severe injury
  • Tumors of the mouth and jaw

When it comes to malocclusion there are different categories;

  • Class 1 malocclusion is the most common. The bite is normal, but the upper teeth slightly overlap the lower teeth.
  • Class 2 malocclusion, also called overbite, occurs when the upper jaw and teeth severely overlap the bottom jaw and teeth.
  • Class 3 malocclusion, also called underbite, occurs when the lower jaw protrudes or juts forward, causing the lower jaw and teeth to overlap the upper jaw and teeth.

Some symptoms of malocclusion include;

  • Abnormal alignment of teeth
  • Abnormal appearance of the face
  • Difficulty or discomfort when biting or chewing
  • Speech difficulties (rare) including lisp
  • Mouth breathing

By treating moderate or severe malocclusion, the teeth are easier to clean and there is less risk of tooth decay and periodontal diseases (gingivitis or periodontitis). Treatment eliminates strain on the teeth, jaws, and muscles, which lessens the risk of breaking a tooth and may reduce symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorders.

The goal at our office is to correct the positioning of the teeth with braces or other appliances.

Heart Health Month!

February 21st, 2013

Important Information for Patients with Cold Sores

January 8th, 2013

Important Information for Patients with Cold Sores

Cold Sores are a fact of life for some people.  The virus that causes cold sores is herpes simplex 1 and can lay dormant in one’s body for years.  When the cold sore virus strikes, you will experience blisters on the lips and possibly even nose.  These little blisters can be caused by stress, sun, fatigue, cold weather or even physical irritation of the lips (such as a visit to the dentist).  Visiting the dentist or orthodontist when a cold sore is present can cause discomfort, irritate the lesion, (which can prolong the course and increase the severity of the infection), as well as spread the herpes virus to members of the dental team.  If you have a cold sore, it is highly recommended that you avoid non-emergency dental treatment. Your comfort is our top concern and we ask that you reschedule your appointment until the lesion disappears, which is usually about 2 weeks.

More information on the cold sore virus can be found at: http://bodyandhealth.canada.com/channel_condition_info_details.asp?disease_id=33&channel_id=1029&relation_id=87442

When Should My Child See an Orthodontist??

October 18th, 2012

A question we commonly get asked is “When should my child first see an orthodontist?.” The American and Canadian Associations of Orthodontists recommends that all children see an orthodontist by the age seven. At this age, the orthodontist will evaluate whether your child will need interceptive orthodontic treatment. The importance of identifying orthodontic issues at a younger age has been shown to minimize, or even eliminate, more extensive orthodontic treatment later in life. Often early orthodontic intervention can help guide proper jaw development and allow proper room for normal eruption of the permanent teeth. If you have further questions please do not hesitate to give our office a call 1-800-920-9798.

Helpful Tips for Healthy Smiles at Halloween

October 11th, 2012

Click on the link below for some helpful tips for healthy smiles at Halloween.

It's National Orthodontic Health Month - Here are Some Tips to Keep Your Braces Clean!!

October 4th, 2012

It's National Orthodontic Health Month and we want to make sure you braces are as clean and as shiny as they can be! Here are some great tips on keeping those braces sparkling!!

One tooth at a time. When you brush, take time with each individual tooth – at least 10 seconds each – and pay careful attention to the spots where your teeth touch your braces.

It’s all about the angles. Brush the tops of your teeth and braces with your brush angled down toward where they meet. Brush the bottoms of your teeth and braces with your brush angled up.

The tooth, the whole tooth, nothing but the tooth. While the front surface of your teeth may seem like the most logical to clean, it’s equally important to clean the inner surface of your teeth (tongue side) as well as the chewing surface. And be sure to clean along your gum line – a key spot for plaque buildup.

Step 1: eat, step 2: clean. While you’re in treatment, it’s important to brush after every meal. Bits of food can easily get caught between braces and teeth, and these food bits interact with bacteria in your mouth to cause decay. The longer food is in contact with your teeth, the greater opportunity for plaque to form. If you are eating somewhere that you can’t brush, thoroughly rinse your mouth with water.

Always be prepared. The easiest way to be sure you can brush after every meal is to get in the habit of taking a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss with you wherever you go. Designate a special container just for your teeth-cleaning tools and keep it in your purse, backpack, or laptop case.

Remove the moving parts. If you have elastic bands or headgear, remove these parts before you brush or floss.

Fluoride is your friend. Fluoride helps prevent cavities. Be sure to brush with fluoride toothpaste, and rinse with fluoride mouthwash.

Interproximal brushes (sometimes called proxa brushes or interdental brushes) are cone-shaped and come in very handy for reaching spots around your braces that standard brushes can’t.

Find the floss for you. Regular floss works for some patients, but others find it easier to work with a floss threader, which helps you get the floss into tight places. Other patients like an all-in-one product called Superfloss, which comes with a stiff end for easy threading, a spongy section for cleaning wide spaces, and regular floss for narrow spaces.

Make time for the pros. It’s your job to take care of the everyday cleaning. But make sure to visit your dentist regularly while in treatment, to get the deep, thorough cleaning that only a professional can provide.

Ask Drs. Baby & Rojas: "What should I expect during my initial consultation?"

May 9th, 2012

Great question! When you first come in for your initial consultation, Drs. Baby & Rojas will conduct a comprehensive examination to assess your oral health. This will better enable us to determine the best treatment method for you.

Your orthodontic evaluation will consist of an oral and facial examination to assess your oral health. We will have you take intraoral and facial photographs as well as panoramic and cephalometric X-rays to help determine the proper orthodontic treatment method. Then, an impression of your teeth and bite will be taken to construct a model of your mouth. (This will help us when examining your diagnostic records).

Then, we will discuss your options with you. Our team feels it’s important to take the time to carefully examine your diagnostic records after your consultation so that we can more thoroughly prepare for your treatment at the office of Drs. Baby & Rojas. This additional preparation will ensure that you receive the best orthodontic care possible. At this time, we encourage you to ask us any questions you may have about your treatment.

If you are seeking orthodontic treatment for your child, our staff asks that both you and your child attend the initial consultation. We feel it is important that both you and your child completely understand the doctor’s recommendations before we proceed with treatment.

Give us a call today and schedule a consultation! We look forward to hearing from you!

"Am I Too Old for Braces?"

March 26th, 2012

Orthodontic treatment for adults is becoming more and more common. In fact, the number of adults getting braces has actually climbed 24 percent since 1996! More adults than ever are realizing that orthodontic treatment is not just for kids, and can help improve the aesthetics and health of a smile of any age! In society where appearance matters and can help make the difference between getting a job or a promotion, adults are choosing wisely to invest in orthodontic treatment.

Some of the most common reasons our adult patients come to us considering orthodontic treatment include:

• Teeth that are crowded or spaced apart, sometimes as a result of tooth decay or gum disease
• Pain or pressure from crooked teeth or a misaligned jaw

Patient Question: "Are Braces Right For Me?"

February 24th, 2012

Braces aren't just for kids anymore! Regardless of your age, if you've always wanted to smile with confidence, but knowing that your teeth were less than perfect held you back, getting braces might be the solution you've been looking for. A straight smile can do so much for your self-esteem, and at the office of Dr. Paula Baby and Jaime Rojas, we want to help you achieve the smile of your dreams.

In addition to the aesthetic benefits of orthodontic treatment, there are many health benefits as well. Teeth that are properly aligned are easier to clean and function more optimally when it comes to eating and speaking.

If you recognize any of these signs in your child or yourself, it might be time to schedule a consultation with Drs. Baby & Rojas.

• Early or late loss of baby teeth
• Difficulty chewing or biting
• Mouth breathing
• Sucking the thumb or fingers, or other oral habits
• Crowded, misplaced, or blocked-out teeth
• Jaws that shift, make sounds, protrude, or are recessed
• Speech difficulty
• Biting the cheek or biting into the roof of the mouth
• Protruding teeth, teeth that meet in an abnormal way, or teeth that don’t meet at all
• Grinding or clenching of teeth
• Inability to comfortably close lips

Drs. Baby & Rojas will be able to assess your orthodontic needs during your appointment and explain all the wonderful benefits you can expect to receive during your time in braces. We look forward to seeing you or your child for a consultation!

Back to school with Drs. Baby & Rojas

August 29th, 2011

Now that many of the schools in London, Wingham and Goderich are back in session, Drs. Baby & Rojas would like to remind all of our patients about the importance of scheduling appointments in advance. With school, clubs, sports and family duties to consider, we know that it can be challenging to find time to visit our office this fall. In order to accommodate all of our patients’ busy schedules, it is important that you plan ahead for your appointments so that we are able to provide you with an appointment time that is convenient for you.

As always, please remember to give us advanced notice if you’re unable to make your regularly-scheduled appointment. If we receive enough notice, we might be able to schedule another patient for that time. Feel free to give us a call if you have any questions, or if you would like to schedule your fall appointment.

We’ll see you soon and hope summer is winding down nicely for all our patients!

Breaking bad habits, from Drs. Baby and Rojas

May 9th, 2011

At the office of Drs. Baby and Rojas, we know good dental health requires only a few minutes a day. We thought we’d provide some practical advice on how to improve your or your child’s smile between your visits with Drs. Baby and Rojas.

Start by brushing your teeth twice a day. Proper brushing techniques are an essential part of maintaining good oral health, as well as preventing gum disease. Brushing daily helps remove decay-causing plaque from tooth surfaces. Please consult Drs. Baby and Rojas if you would like us to review brushing techniques with you or your child. Flossing daily will also prevent plaque to build up between the teeth and prevent stains between your teeth. Research has shown the bacteria of gum disease has been linked to coronary artery disease, stroke, diabetes and memory loss. Lastly, we encourage you to throw away old toothbrushes and replace them every 2 or 3 months, or after an illness.

We hope this helps! If you have any further questions about any of these tips, please contact our convenient Wingham, Goderich and London offices or ask us on Facebook!

Oral Health and Overall Health, from Drs. Baby & Rojas

July 23rd, 2010

Our team knows that while in orthodontic treatment, it is important to maintain proper oral health. According to a recent study by the British Columbia Dental Hygienists' Association, periodontal disease is linked to not only your oral health, but also the health of other body functions.

It is commonly known that proper oral health is important for many everyday functions, such as eating, talking, and kissing. New correlations have now been found linking poor oral health and cardio-vascular disease, diabetes, respiratory problems, and other systemic diseases. "Patients who have had previous infections of the heart valve may need antibiotics before having dental work done," says Cardiologist Dr. Nisha D'Mello of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

Have you been brushing, flossing, and visiting us for your regularly scheduled appointments? If not, give us a call! Also, be sure to visit your general dentist every six months for an oral exam to check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue.

Have a great week!

-Drs. Baby & Rojas

Our New Soft Tissue Laser

June 8th, 2010

We are excited to announce that our office has recently purchased a new soft tissue laser for use with our patients to speed up treatment time.

The laser enables us to remove tissue and place brackets to teeth sooner in order to speed up treatment. In the past, orthodontists would sometimes wait 6 months - 1 year for these teeth to fully erupt before placing brackets. Now we can drastically speed up treatment with laser tissue removal! The really great news about this laser is that it is one of the most high tech on the market, the ezlase 940. It runs at a very specific wavelength that is far more comfortable for patients. You can learn more about this process by giving us a call today!

More About Orthodontics From Drs. Baby & Rojas

April 23rd, 2010

There are so many questions about orthodontics that we never ask, so Drs. Jaime Rojas and Paula Baby took some time to explain the most common concerns.

At what age should orthodontic treatment occur?

Orthodontic treatment can be started at any age. Many orthodontic problems are easier to correct if detected at an early age before jaw growth has slowed. Early treatment may mean that a patient can avoid surgery and more serious complications. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child first visit an orthodontist by age seven or earlier if a problem is detected by parents, the family dentist or the child's physician.

What is Phase I and Phase II treatment?

Phase I, or early interceptive treatment, is limited orthodontic treatment (i.e. expander, Herbst, Facemask, headgear, or partial braces) before all of the permanent teeth have erupted. Such treatment can occur between the ages of six and ten. This treatment is sometimes recommended to make more space for developing teeth, correction of crossbites, overbites, underbites, or harmful oral habits. Phase II treatment is also called comprehensive treatment, because it involves full braces when all of the permanent teeth have erupted, usually between the ages of eleven and thirteen.

Would an adult patient benefit from orthodontics?

Absolutely!! Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age. Everyone wants a beautiful and healthy smile. Between 30-40% of our patients are adults.

How does orthodontic treatment work?

Braces use steady gentle pressure to gradually move teeth into their proper positions. The brackets that are placed on your teeth and the arch wire that connects them are the main components. When the arch wire is placed into the brackets, it tries to return to its original shape. As it does so, it applies pressure to move your teeth to their new, more ideal positions.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Treatment times vary on a case-by-case basis, but the average time is from one to two years. Actual treatment time can be affected by rate of growth and severity of the correction necessary. Treatment length is also dependent upon patient compliance. Maintaining good oral hygiene and keeping regular appointments are important in keeping your treatment time on schedule.

Do braces hurt?

The placement of bands and brackets on your teeth does not hurt. Once your braces are placed and connected with the arch wires, you may feel some soreness of your teeth for one to four days. Your lips and cheeks may need one to two weeks to get used to the braces on your teeth.

Will braces interfere with playing sports?

No. It is recommended, however, that patients protect their smiles by wearing a mouth guard when participating in any sporting activity. Mouth guards are inexpensive, comfortable, and come in a variety of colors and patterns.

Will braces interfere with playing musical instruments?

No. However, there may be an initial period of adjustment. In addition, brace covers or wax can be provided to prevent discomfort.

Should I see my general dentist while I have braces?

Yes, you should continue to see your general dentist every six months for cleaning and dental checkups, or more frequently as recommended.

Got more questions? Give us a call at our office! We'd love to hear from you.
